Country Cottage 'Slugburger' Cooking Show!

Jan. 17, 2011 - PRLog -- CORINTH – Country Cottage assisted living on North Polk Street held a cooking show on Thursday, January 13th for their Residents. The Cottage staff cooked ‘slugburgers’ for all the Residents, just as they have been made for generations. The Cottage staff and Residents also reminisced about the history of the slugburger.

These tasty burgers originated in Corinth, Mississippi during the Great Depression when diner cooks used potato flour as an extender to stretch ground beef for more burgers. The term “slug” is an old slang word for a nickel. Because these burgers used to cost just five cents – the name “slugburger” was born! Today, Corinth and several surrounding towns in Mississippi continue to prepare and serve the ‘slugburger’ just as they have done in years past.  

“We all had so much fun during the cooking show,” says April Davis, Managing Director at Country Cottage.  “Some of the Residents experienced their first slugbuger today.  Jane Winchester said it was ‘awesome’, Larry Emery said it was ‘another good tasty hamburger’, Mary Marino thought they were delicious as did Linda Cude.  This was just a great event for us to enjoy good food, reminisce about old times, and just have fun!”
