Jan. 17, 2011 - PRLog -- The following are some ways you can spot and seal air leaks.

Spot air leaks

You can detect air leaks by using an incense stick. Hold the incense stick near the windows and doors in your home. Repeat this procedure near plumbing fixtures and attic hatches. Try this procedure with other areas where you may suspect a leak. If you observe smoke moving in a horizontal direction then it means that there is a major leak to fix. However, if you find a vertical column of smoke then the window or door is air tight.

How to fix leaks?

Air leaks can be fixed by a method known as caulking. After detecting the air leak, caulk the doors and windows where the leak is coming from.

Areas you might find leaks include:

•   Ducting
•   Plumbing
•   Electrical wiring which passes through ceilings and walls
•   Window and door frames

Similarly, a kitchen exhaust fan is a common source of air leaks. You can solve this problem by purchasing a kitchen exhaust fan cover.

It is worth noting that all new builds now require a professional air leakage test certificate to pass building regulations.
