The Australia Open 2011

A new year and a new season for tennis, but little has changed at the top of Sporting Index’s win index for the Australian Open.

Jan. 14, 2011 - PRLog -- Sports spread betting punters will hardly be surprised to see Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal jostling for the highest spread quote, with Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic banging on the door.

Federer is the current holder of the Aussie Open, after defeating Andy Murray in the final last year, causing the Scot to break down in tears. Buyers of the total games spread in the final might have done the same, given that the Swiss man despatched his opponent in three sets and just 32 games. However, as buyers of Rafa’s Grand Slam index spread last year will surely be aware, 2010 belonged to Mr. Nadal. The Spaniard won the three other major events in the calendar, finally completing his career Grand Slam with triumph in the US Open.

Sellers of Federer’s tournament index spread will be hoping that Old Father Time has finally caught up with the world number two, who will be bidding for his fifth triumph at Melbourne Park at the ripe old age of 29. Along with buyers of Nadal’s spread, these punters will also be encouraged by Rafa’s physical condition - his dodgy knee seems to be doing just fine.

Should the event go the way of the form book and these great rivals do meet in the final, Sporting Index’s tennis traders will be kept busy by total games spread buyers and sellers. In the pair’s seven head-to-heads in Grand Slam finals, all but one match has gone to at least four sets, while their only meeting in the climax of the year’s first Slam, in 2009, lasted five sets and 51 games.

Fifth seed Murray is given third billing according to the spread market makers, but a tough draw could await, with the possibility that he would need to beat all of the world’s top three before getting his hands on the silverware Down Under.

The distribution among the top players’ spread quotes in the women’s contest is much tighter, partly due to the absence of Serena Williams. Kim Clijsters become’s Sporting Index’s spread favourite, but there will also be plenty of spread buyers willing to show their support for a significant cast which includes Justine Henin, Vera Zvonereva and world number one Caroline Wozniacki. The Australian Open has, whether true or not, earned a reputation for the odd shock finalist, and spread punters may take an interest in home favourite Sam Stosur. The 26-year old from Brisbane will have the crowds behind her and although spread buyers might not be taking a position because they think she will triumph outright, they will have noted her first singles final appearance at the French Open last year.
