Jan. 13, 2011 - PRLog -- Somerville, MA — January 12, 2010 — Cloudant, the leading cloud data analytics software platform based on Apache-based CouchDB and creator of open-source BigCouch, today announced it has ended its Q4 2010 with over 400% growth in customers using Cloudant’s hosting services since the release of the company’s open source technology, BigCouch, just over 3 months ago to surpass 2500 customers for its hosted service. Delivering 18 straight months of consistent product innovation to its growing customer base, Cloudant is empowering the most data-intensive enterprises with a suite of databases, data analytics, and search applications that fundamentally change the way businesses, from startups to large enterprises, manage and analyze data.

“This is an exciting time for Cloudant and I couldn’t be more pleased with how well our team is executing to meet the growing demands of ‘Big Data’ and continuing to innovate where customers most need a solution that just works,” said Cloudant founder and CEO Alan Hoffman. “BigCouch extends CouchDB to solve a huge problem for data intensive environments, removing the cost and complexity. Today we have more than 10 billion documents and 25 terabytes hosted on Cloudant.”

Cloudant introduces a fundamentally new, dynamic architecture for hosting web applications that operates and scales seamlessly, relying on the platform itself to scale to meet the needs and demands of their business as it grows. Cloudant frees developers and IT staff from time consuming and repetitive operational setup and maintenance decisions around scaling their operations. As conditions change, Cloudant flexibly adapts so that developers and customers can focus on their differentiated code and unique value.
Since 2008, Cloudant has been grounded in the emerging ‘NoSQL’ philosophy of databases.  Since delivering the very first version of Cloudant in Q3 2010, Cloudant has sustained a 4X customer adoption growth rate, demonstrating increased demand in lower cost, higher time to value products.

*Expanding the Team: Noted NoSQL Veterans Sign On *

Earlier this month Cloudant added noted NoSQL industry leaders Tim Anglade and Bob Newson. Frenchman Anglade needs no introduction in the NoSQL community known for is tireless developer advocacy, community outreach and customer evanglism, all areas he will be heading up. Also joining the team is Bob Newson. Newson is best known for his work and extensive contributions to CouchDB since 2008.  Among his key contributions include the CouchDB-lucene extension, which provides full-text indexing capabilities.  Newson is an expert in distributed systems, big data processing, and Erlang,

Cloudant’s hosted database service supports thousands of applications for businesses of all sizes.   In addition to the standalone service, Cloudant is available as an add-on technology from service providers such as Heroku.

About CouchDB

Apache CouchDB is a document-oriented database that can be queried and indexed in a MapReduce fashion using JavaScript. CouchDB also offers incremental replication with bi-directional conflict detection and resolution.  CouchDB serves thousands of companies around the globe, large and small and is used by some of the world’s busiest web sites and applications, including The BBC, Interactive Mediums, and Canonical’s Ubuntu One,  CouchDB received an Honorable Mention in ReadWriteWeb’s ‘Top 10 Enterprise Products of 2010.’

About BigCouch

BigCouch is a highly available, fault-tolerant, clustered, API-compliant version of Apache CouchDB. BigCouch allows developers to create clusters of CouchDBs that are distributed over an arbitrary number of servers, while it appears to the end-user as one single CouchDB instance. Using BigCouch, one or more nodes in an elastic cluster act in concert to store and retrieve documents, index and serve views, and serve CouchApps.

BigCouch was developed to address a common complaint around scaling horizontally across many servers and is a necessary feature for CouchDB is to be used to address Big Data problems. Cloundant is actively working with the CouchDB community to provide open-source BigCouch’s extended functionality back into the main project.
