Follow on Google News | Competitive land and sea events at Torquay on the Surf CoastDanger and cosy are two words that aren’t usually used in the same sentence, but they are when referring to one of the biggest and most popular open water swims in Australia.
By: VisitGreatOceanRoad.org.au Protected by Point Danger, the distance of the triangular course is 1000 metres, which is the reason for the somewhat daunting name of Danger 1000 – a name which belies the protected nature of the water in which the event is held. The event is open to competitors between 12 and 75 in 12 age group categories, and spot prizes are awarded during the day. Each competitor receives the famous 'event bag' which includes a shirt, swim cap, certificate and other goodies. Spectators can enjoy a picnic under the mature Norfolk pines of the grassed slopes that overlook the Torquay ocean swim event. Competitors will feel safe in the water as over 250 Jan Juc Surf Life Saving Club members have volunteered their expertise on the day. The event attracts athletes from around the country, including previous winner and current record holder, Australian Ironman Champion Ky Hurst of Queensland, whose record time of 8 minutes 47 seconds may take some beating. If you’d like a warm up for the Torquay open ocean swim on land, the 8th annual Bells Bash Cliff Run/Walk will be held the previous day. The event will run from 5pm on Friday 14 January 2011 along the cliff top from Jan Juc Surf Club to the world famous Bells Beach and back. Competitors can choose from a 4km Run/Walk or the more challenging 8km Fun Run. Regularly used by runners and walkers, the undulating track overlooks much of the picturesque coast between the two points. Runners can complete the course in 30 to 45 minutes, while joggers will take between 45 - 60 minutes. All entrants receive the Bells Bash showbag which includes a t-shirt. With 10 categories, spot prizes and trophies, there are opportunities for runners and walkers of all ages and levels of ability with Bells Bash medallions awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd in all categories for the 4km and 8km events.
