One Year After the Earthquake Mission of Hope Haiti Still Serving Strong

Nearly one year ago a 7.0 earthquake ravaged Haiti, leaving it forever changed. Established in 1998, Mission of Hope Haiti (MOH) has been serving communities just north of Port-au-Prince for over a decade and was prepared to serve those devastated by the disaster that struck the impoverished country on January 12th, 2010.

Mission of Hope was one of the first responders after the quake, providing immediate relief to those in need. As the earthquake killed more than 230,000 people, and uprooted thousands more, MOH adapted to its new environment expanding its efforts in Haiti.

“In Haiti’s darkest hour God had prepared Mission of Hope to be there to bring the Gospel in its brightest moment,” said Brad Johnson president of Mission of Hope. “We are very thankful to have been there to serve over 15 million meals throughout the country.”

Since the earthquake, Mission of Hope has:

Delivered over 15 million meals
Fed 50,000 children daily through its partnership with Convoy of Hope
Treated 27,000 patients at the Clinic of Hope
Performed 266 orthopedic and plastic surgeries
Provided 75 prosthetic limbs
Constructed 18 village homes
Started construction on building a 500 home community
Expanded its School of Hope to include over 2,516 students
Equipped over 200 family farmers with agricultural training
Seen over 1,000 people make first-time commitments to follow Jesus
Employed 240 Haitians

Over one million people still live without homes, electricity and security. Recently, however, the government donated 200 acres to MOH for a housing development.

“You hear so many negative reports about what is not being done – you very seldom hear what is being done,” Johnson said. “There are homes being built throughout the nation and there are families moving in – there just aren’t enough. A lot of that comes down to needing the ongoing help of those in North America to see that their brothers and sisters in Haiti can move forward.”
