Jan. 6, 2011 - PRLog -- Kansas City, Mo. – Grantham University, an online university dedicated to providing educational opportunities to military service men and women for 60 years, announced today that it has awarded  its annual Blue Star Flag Scholarship to Army wife and mother, Carrie Murphy, of Waynesville, Mo.  The scholarship will cover tuition costs, required textbooks, software, and fees for Mrs. Murphy to earn an undergraduate degree at Grantham.

Mrs. Murphy is married to Army Engineer, Brian, who has served in the military for nine and one-half years.  Together, they have three children under the age of five.  Mrs. Murphy applied for the Blue Star Flag scholarship because it is important to her to earn a college degree, a dream that she has not pursued until now because she did not want to be a burden on the family’s finances.

“This scholarship will give me the opportunity to acquire the tools necessary to have a career that would be portable enough to move from military base to military base with my husband,” commented Mrs. Murphy. “I want my husband and children to be proud of me. I want to be proud of me.”

Mrs. Murphy is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice.  She plans to combine her prior experience working with victims of domestic and sexual abuse with her degree in order to achieve her long-term goal of becoming a Victim Advocate.

“While there were many wonderful applicants for this scholarship, Carrie stood out because of her dedication and support of her husband and our nation’s armed forces,” said Dr. Fredrick Snow, president of Grantham University.  “With her drive and motivation, I know that she will quickly achieve her educational goals and use the knowledge gleaned from this experience to help others.”

The Blue Star Flag Scholarship is awarded annually in honor of the Blue Star Flag, which first appeared in 1917, when an Army captain who had two sons serving on the front line designed it as a tribute to their dedication and service. The flag quickly became the unofficial symbol of a child in the service.  Today, families who have a loved one serving in the military display the Blue Star Flag in the front window of their homes to show the family’s pride in their loved one who is serving and to remind others that preserving America’s freedom demands much.

Since its launch in 2006, Grantham’s Blue Star Flag program has donated over 80,000 flags to military families with a loved one serving our country. To learn more about this program, visit http://www.mybluestarflag.com.
