When is a Cupcake not a Cupcake and what has marketing got to do with it anyway?

Have you noticed Cupcakes seem to be all the rage over the last couple of years in the UK? Now I’ve no clue when the citizens of the UK adopted the American name Cupcake as the cover all term for small cakes.

Jan. 5, 2011 - PRLog -- Back in the day, during my childhood, a Cupcake was small flat sponge cake and covered with icing or melted chocolate. Then there was the fairy cake, raised sponge cake with currants in it. Kid’s loved butterfly cake, with it’s centre was cut out and replaced with butter-cream beautifully piped, the cut out centre was then sliced in two  formed the wings of the butterfly cake just before it was dusted with icing sugar!

Cupcakes have also become popular with an increasing number of brides who chose to forgo the traditional tiered iced, fruit wedding cake for their special day. Have you been to a wedding lately and seen a beautiful collection of Cupcakes arranged on a tiered stand? Today’s weddings are a co-ordinated affair Cupcakes, napkins, bridesmaid dresses, groom and best man’s ties!

So, can you have your cake and eat it?

Now I'm no cake baking domestic goddess but I'm a wizz when it comes to online local search marketing, bordering on geek actually. As an example let's take the English city of Peterborough where my parents and my brother live. I bet you 50 pence you didn't know that there are 580 local searches for the term ‘Cake Peterborough‘ every month.

Or that there are 780 global monthly searches for the term ‘Cake Peterborough‘. Not many people would know that and very few know how to find that kind of information when they set about trying to raise their business profile online.

Yet, imagine the opportunity that those 580 local search  could represent for your business as a Peterborough Cake Maker! To get the lions share of the Cake Peterborough searches the business just needs to be visible online to all those people. Very few people flick through the Yellow Pages these days that's for sure, they do make a handy doorstop though!

Now, did you know that more people are searching for businesses online using smart phones, like iPhones and Blackberries, than ever before?

Do you know what those people are typing  into search engines like Google when they are looking for a business like yours?  Is your  business visible to those people?

If you have a website can it be viewed in a smart phone browser?

A website needs to be easily viewable in smartphone browsers like iPhone / iPod touch, Google Android, Blackberry Storm and Torch, Palm Pre and other touch-based smartphones. It is essential to the survival of  to local businesses in today’s market.
