Jan. 5, 2011 - PRLog -- Advanced Restoration Corporation reminds residents affected by recent winter storms causing property damage to protect themselves from unscrupulous contractors. A good, trustworthy contractor can be a key partner in the rebuilding process. However, unscrupulous contractors may take advantage of people who have recently experienced a catastrophic event.

“Ensure that any signed contract has a detailed description of all work to be performed,” said Gary Matzelle, Marketing Director, Advanced Restoration Corporation. “The contract should also include the contractor’s business name, address and telephone number.” Today, many contractors have websites that contain detailed information about their company, services provided and affiliations.

Tips to Avoid Getting Scammed:

Take your time in choosing a contractor to repair your home.

Get estimates from several licensed, bonded contractors.

Check their credentials with your local Better Business Bureau or Home Builders Association.

Inspect contractors' licenses and proof of liability insurance.

Avoid paying money up-front. Some reputable contractors will require partial, up-front payment, but these pre-work payments shouldn't exceed the cost of materials.

Follow local building codes and inspection procedures.

If anyone performs unauthorized work on your house or property and demands payment, consider contacting local authorities.

Immediately report any suspicious behavior to your local police, sheriff's department or your state's Department of Insurance.

Finally, monitor the work being done. Stay in contact with the contractor. If problems arise and you cannot get satisfaction from the contractor, contact your local Office of Consumer Affairs or your town's local licensing board as soon as possible.
