Jan. 6, 2011 - PRLog -- BMI's long-held view is that Poland will prove a growth outperformer over the short and long term, as the nation's domestic demand base shields the economy from the worst of global headwinds, while economic convergence with Western Europe propels higher living standards.

Although Poland shipbuilding is in terminal decline and national carrier LOT Polish Airlines is finding it difficult to remain profitable, the country is attracting new logistics and shipping business. Poland's profile is rising in the global shipping sector, with the country now a stop on a direct Asia-Europe service rather than being a feeder call. The Chinese port of Ningbo is considering developing the Polish port of Gdansk into a maritime gateway into Central and Eastern Europe for Chinese goods. An LNG terminal is being built at the port of Swinoujscie. Hong Kong-based container liner and logistics operator Ocean Overseas Container Line (OOCL) in July started to transfer its container feeder service in Poland to International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI)'s Baltic Container Terminal (BCT) in the Port of Gdynia. French logistics provider SDV opened two offices in Poland in October and plans to open several more to handle the country's growing market for inbound and outbound freight services.

BMI's forecast for Poland's air freight shows a year-on-year (y-o-y) growth of cargo traffic in 2010. We anticipate Poland's air freight volume recovering by 7.8% y-o-y in 2010 to 57,700 tonnes, after an estimated 7.98% contraction in 2009.

BMI expects cargo handled at two of Poland's key ports, the Port of Gdansk and the Port of Gdynia, to have strong growth in general tonnage terms during 2010. The Port of Gdansk throughput will increase by 12.6% to 21.24mn tonnes, following a good 2009 performance when the port was largely able to side-step the effects of the international recession. Volumes at Gdansk grew 6.1% to 18.86mn tonnes in 2009. This year total volume at the Port of Gdynia will gain 8.9% to 14.43mn tonnes. Last year volume at Gdynia contracted 14.3% to 13.26mn tonnes.

For the rail freight sector, we expect the volumes to rise 3.19% to 207.2mn tonnes this year, after falling 19.3% in 2009. The pace should accelerate in 2011 with a growth of 4.93%.

Road freight is believed to have grown 6.6% in 2010 after a growth of 7% in 2009. Road freight growth rates are down on the 9.7% and 11% growth rates of 2007 and 2008.
