Twelve Devon Prep students are first to be inducted into Quill & Scroll Society.

Dec. 29, 2010 - PRLog -- Twelve Devon Prep students were the first to be inducted into the school’s recently established chapter of the Quill and Scroll Society, the international honor society for high school journalists. During a ceremony in Calasanctius Hall, before family, friends and faculty, seven seniors and five juniors were welcomed into the Society by Mr. Larry Theuer and Mrs. Elizabeth Eshleman, co-moderators of Devon Prep’s student newspaper "The Devon Dialogue."

The new inductees include:
Zachary J. Adams, Matthew B. Baldassano, Gregory C. Bokar, Harry G. Crimi, Jr., Jordan T. Kelly, Stephen R. Sloto, Justin S. Wickersham, Joseph F. Geiger, James M. Lockard, Ryan C. O’Shea, Roshan B. Patel, and Nathan E. Stauffer.

Among the qualifications for membership into Devon Prep’s chapter of the society are: a GPA of 3.5 or higher in the last 2 semesters; superior work in some phase of high school journalism; submission of at least 2 quality articles in the last year; recommendation by the Devon Prep Quill and Scroll committee; and approval by the Society’s executive director.

The Induction ceremony included the distribution of the badge of membership, honor cords for the seniors to wear at Commencement in June, and a candle lighting ceremony demonstrating the core values of the Society: Truth, Learning, Leadership, Loyalty, Initiative, Integrity, Judgment and Friendship.

In addressing the new inductees Mrs. Eshleman said, “The ability that you have displayed in your work promises much more from you whether or not you enter the profession of journalism. But talent means little if it is not accompanied by industry,” she explained.

“Membership into Quill and Scroll involves responsibility which you must not forget - the duty to devote yourself to the welfare of your school, and to any other group or community to which you may later belong. In a few years the obligation of leadership will fall to you, make certain that you are fully prepared and fully qualified to assume responsibility.”

Before the induction ceremony concluded the new members of the Quill and Scroll Society honored Devon Prep Headmaster Rev. James Shea, Sch.P. and Assistant Headmaster Mr. Larry Iezzi for their support and guidance. They were both presented with testimonial scrolls.

The Quill and Scroll International Honorary Society for High School Journalists was founded in 1926. The society recognizes individual student achievement in journalism and scholastic publication. Since the society’s founding more than 14,000 high schools in all 50 states and 45 foreign countries have been chartered.
