Most undergraduate degrees are three years - some four, and a few even longer. While that might seem like a sizable amount of time at the beginning, it's striking how quickly it can all pass you by. For most people the student experience is a busy one - or, at lease, it presents you with the opportunity to be very busy. Students work hard and play hard, and try to find time to feed and clothe themselves in between. Critical to making the most of the lifestyle is a competent grasp on time management, and it's as well to give some thought to this as soon as you start at university.
The first thing to acknowledge is that you can't fit everything it. Most universities and colleges hold something like a 'freshers' fair' at the beginning of your first year, and many hold a 'refreshers fair' or similar in subsequent years. Through these channels and through others it is possible to become engaged in a remarkably wide range of activities - it is not uncommon for students to row, wrestle, play chess and sing in a choir in the same week as they cook dinner for friends, host a house party and find time to go out on Saturday night.
Add to this the demands of academic work and maintaining a close circle of friends, and its easy to see how students can tend to live unhealthy, sleep-deprived and stressful lives. The key to effective time management is selection and preparation. That is to say that there are only so many hours in the day and the first thing to do is select and prioritise those demands on your time which require imminent attention. No one can do everything - particularly in the limited window of three to four years offered by most courses - and its generally better to do one thing well than ten things badly. Having once prioritised your activities in this way, preparation helps to ease the pressure and allow you to get more done in a short space of time.
Parkinson's Law - that 'work expands to fill the time available' - tends to hold true in student life, so by identifying and limiting the available time, you can control the workload and prevent yourself from being overburdened. Time management is a discipline, and the more rigorously you regulate yourself, the more it is possible to achieve in a limited timeframe.
The trick then is to regulate yourself with sufficient rigour to achieve what you want while allowing yourself the freedom to relax and enjoy your student years before they (all too rapidly) pass you by.
