Dec. 26, 2010 - PRLog -- The ever growing popularity of relocating to Australia can be attributed to many things and the country’s community feeling and general warmth is often cited as a key factor. Potential immigrants should especially keep Queensland in mind if these are important issues for them and the beautiful state recently affirmed this when Premier Anna Bligh congratulated four extremely community minded individuals as Queensland recipients of the 2011 Australian of the Year Awards. The four categories in the prestigious awards program are for Australian of the Year, Senior Australian of the Year, Young Australian of the Year and Local Hero.

Premier Bligh beautifully summed up the spirit of these awards in her statement: "These awards showcase leading Queenslanders whose inspirational achievements challenge us to make our own contribution towards creating an even better Australia for our future. Our State has always been a place that produces extraordinary people and the four Queenslanders who have won awards this year are great examples of that tradition."

A brief look at the award winners would also do anyone who has recently relocated to Australia, as well as any native of the Land Down Under, proud.

Associate Professor Noel Hayman is the Queensland Australian of the Year. Hayman was Queensland's first indigenous doctor and, as Ms Bligh so elegantly put it, “is making a massive contribution to indigenous health and his work is improving the control of diabetes and immunization rates. He is also working to recruit more indigenous doctors and his work is creating a huge and positive legacy in Queensland.”

Gay and lesbian advocate, Mrs. Shelley Argent OAM has been made the Queensland Senior Australian of the Year for her work supporting equal rights for all. As quoted by Ms Bligh, “Shelley began her work as a gay and lesbian rights advocate when her son came out and she is a courageous and loving mother who has also offered great support to other families with gay children.”

The 2011 Queensland Young Australia of the Year is popular teenage sailor Miss Jessica Watson, all of 16 years old. Watson became a national phenomenon with her round the world expedition. According to Ms Bligh, “Jessica needs no introduction and the whole of Australia was enthralled by her efforts in sailing solo, unassisted, non-stop around the world.”

Finally, there is Dr Donald Bowley who was named the Queensland Local Hero. Bowley was awarded for his work as a doctor with the Mount Isa Royal Flying Doctor Service. Once again the Premier said it best: “Dr Bowley has earned a reputation as being the 'the best in the west' and he really is a Queensland local hero.”

The aforementioned foursome will join winners from other states as finalists for the national awards which will be announced by Julia Gillard, Prime Minister of Australia in Canberra on 25 January 2011.

While the other finalists are sure to be worthy of their nominations as well the Queensland finalists are bound to make one the largest impacts on those potentially relocating to Australia. All four are very community oriented – something often highly valued amongst Australian immigrants – and provided services and accomplishments that can be equally used and appreciated by natives and immigrants alike.

Without actually realizing it Queensland may have just convinced dozens more people to relocate to their shores and make Australia their home.
