Adventure Day Trips in Spitsbergen

Dec. 24, 2010 - PRLog -- Aqua-Firma is pleased to introduce a series of new adventure day trips in the Arctic.  These day trips, which run from June through to September, are an ideal compliment to one of Aqua-Firma’s Polar Voyages to Spitsbergen.  They are suited to anybody with a sense of adventure and in search of a taste of sea kayaking, trekking, dog sledding on wheels and fossil hunting in the Arctic wilderness.  

From towering 1000 metre peaks to the tranquil waters of majestic fjords, a day out in the Arctic wilderness is an experience not to be missed.  The long summer days allow for full day trekking and kayaking trips, with greater opportunities to explore this fascinating polar region.  Spitsbergen’s characteristic mountainous landscapes, icebergs and glaciers can provide an array of photographic opportunities, as can the local wildlife, including seabirds, reindeer and bearded seals.  

Mountain trekking challenging treks across the Lars Glacier and ascents of two mountain summits (Hjortfjellet and Trollsteinen) are rewarded by panoramic views and a great sense of achievement.   The 24 hour daylight brings the Arctic tundra out into full bloom, transforming an otherwise barren landscape into a picturesque backdrop of colour and life.

Dog sledding is not just a winter activity, but can also be experienced during the summer on wheels.  On this trip you are trained in the principles of mushing and provided with your own pack of Alaskan huskies to drive out across the tundra.

Arctic sea kayaking through the often calm waters of Spitsbergen’s fjords allows for complete escapism from everyday life, with no other sound but the gentle lapping of the paddle and the surrounding polar wilderness.  No previous experience in kayaking is required, as all necessary training will be provided by enthusiastic expert guides.  All necessary equipment, including dry suits and safety equipment will also be provided.

Whilst all of Aqua-Firma’s Spitsbergen Voyages have a strong focus on natural history, geology, scenery and polar history, some come equipped with specialist guidance and equipment to cater for more developed interests in activities such as sea kayaking, scuba diving, longer trekking, snow shoe walking, birdwatching and photography.  Kayaking can be built in as a ½ day taster, or for keen kayakers it can form the basis of almost everyday’s activity. Equally, diving, photography and trekking can all be integrated as a lesser or main aspect of your experience.
