Dec. 22, 2010 - PRLog -- Robert Callaghan of Selden, NY, accepted the 2010 Public Relations Award on behalf of the Long Island Chapter of the New York State Association of Health Care Providers (HCP) during the Association’s recent annual conference with 225 attendees.  HCP is a trade association of licensed agencies providing in-home and community-based health care.  Callaghan, an industry consultant and the former director of New York Nursing Care, chairs the Long Island Chapter’s Public Relations Committee.

“Public relations efforts are extremely important in raising the profile of home care, including the cost-saving benefits of home care over institutional care, and the preference of the majority of individuals for maintaining independent living as long as possible,” said Callaghan.  “In light of America’s aging population, in-home care is expected to see significant growth.”

Long Islanders founded HCP in 1974 and today the NYS Association  — headquartered in Greenbush, NY — has multiple regional chapters. The Long Island Chapter is active in advocacy and education relative to the industry, bringing its position to legislators, policymakers, regulators, and the public.

In accepting the reward, Callaghan noted that it has been a difficult year for HCP members and most notably, a few small provider agencies forced out of business because of the compounding factors of the economic downturn, state budget cuts, the new MTA tax, and unfunded mandates.

Callaghan has been in the forefront of the home care industry as an agency owner and a longtime Board member of both the LI Chapter and the HCP State Association.  His knowledge is essential to his role as chair of the Public Relations Committee.

In 2007, Callaghan sold his interest in New York Nursing Care to become an independent consultant.  He and his wife, Helen, enjoy days off spent with their three children and five grandchildren.
