Dec. 22, 2010 - PRLog -- Established in 1979 as the first hospice program in Northeast Florida, Community Hospice of Northeast Florida® helps nearly 1,000 patients every day in Baker, Clay, Duval, Nassau and St. Johns counties cope with advanced illness. Knowing that many St. Johns County patients and their families had to commute to Jacksonville for hospice support, it became the vision of Community Hospice to build an inpatient care facility in the St. Augustine area of St. Johns County.

In 2008, Susan Ponder-Stansel, president and CEO of Community Hospice, asked Mark Bailey, president of The Bailey Group, to chair a fundraising committee to raise $5 million for the design and construction of the new center. Bailey not only agreed to be the chairman, he also led the fundraising with a gift donation to dedicate the new center, aptly named the “Bailey Family Center for Caring.”

With fundraising in full swing, Community Hospice and Flagler Health Systems structured an agreement to build the Bailey Family Center for Caring on the campus of Flagler Hospital in St. Augustine. They collaborated on design and construction of the Center, modeling the interior units after Community Hospice’s other inpatient care centers and adding touches unique to St Augustine. Located at 400 Health Park Boulevard, the Bailey Family Center for Caring comprises 11,000 square feet and adjoins Flagler Hospital with a private entrance. It has 12 private patient rooms with baths, family gathering areas, a chapel, several gardens, kitchen and lounge areas for use by both staff and family members, and staff offices—all in a comfortable, homelike setting. The construction is now complete, and interior details are being finalized for an official opening early this month.

Paula and Randy Ringhaver, president of Ring Power Corporation headquartered in St Augustine, have wholeheartedly supported this community effort to build the Center by working on the fundraising campaign. Mrs. Ringhaver also serves on the Community Hospice of Northeast Florida Board of Directors.

On December 10, Community Hospice hosted a preview tour and reception at the Center to showcase to the donors and community what will soon be a reality. Thanks to the generous donations of many community business leaders and residents, the fundraising committee is very close to their goal. Patients in the St. Augustine community will now be able to find comfort and support nearby, from the dedicated staff and volunteers of the Bailey Family Center for Caring at Flagler Hospital.
