Dec. 22, 2010 - PRLog -- Before we question the effectiveness of lutein, let us take a deeper look so we can have a more profound understanding of it.

Our eyes play such a vital role in our everyday lives. Not only that our eyes expose the beauty of the world to our senses, but they also help us to get through with our daily tasks. Our eyes help us understand many things in this world. Many people try their best to avoid eyesight loss, but our eyes, like any other organ, are not spared from degeneration due to genetics or aging. Our eyes are also vulnerable to diseases like any other part of our body.

LUTEIN AND EYESIGHT
As one of the natural components that can be found in the eyes, lutein has its own role to play in protecting our eyesight. It is found in the macula – the part in the center of our retina that absorbs ultraviolet light to protect our eyes. With sufficient intake of lutein, it is proven that it can decrease the risk of developing certain eye diseases such as cataract and age-related macular degeneration or AMD; it also protects our eyes from oxidative stress.
SOURCES OF LUTEIN
There are numerous ways to protect and improve our eyesight. One of which is by taking lutein supplements. Lutein is naturally present in our food. We can get lutein specifically upon intake of green leafy vegetables, which are highly available in the market today. Commercially, there are also lutein supplements that are synthetically processed if vegetables are not in your line of diet. Synthetically produced lutein is popular today as it is incorporated to dietary supplements and because it is being advertised on radio or television. If you are not much of a vegan, you can avail of these products at your local pharmacy. These supplements are available in soft gels or tablets.
LUTEIN AND ITS SIDE EFFECT
Like most drugs that are available over the counter, lutein has also a side effect to human body. With excessive intake of lutein, you can develop carotenodermia. Carotenodermia is defined as the bronzing of the skin, or the development of an orange-like discoloration in the skin. This could be attributed to the nature of lutein being a carotenoid. It is important that you follow the dosage stated in each product if you are taking lutein as a supplement. If you happen to acquire this side effect, consult your doctor immediately.
The discovery of lutein marks a milestone in the field of medical science. With its photo-protective function, lutein helps millions of people worldwide. Prevention is definitely better than cure; before acquiring an eye disorder, prevent its cause by taking lutein regularly. Let us all remember that vision is a gift and taking care of the eyes is a responsibility each one of us should be aware of.

What we feed our bodies feeds our eyes. Many of the vitamins and minerals in our bodies are found in much higher concentrations in our eyes, so a diet lacking in these vitamins and minerals can lead to vision problems as we grow older.
