"Nobody gets ringworm anymore," I overheard one mom comment to the other at the doctor's office the other day.  I was there with my nine-year-old daughter, who sat quite politely and quietly in the seat next to me.

Another little girl about her age came over and asked her to play.  My daughter looked up at me.  I shook my head no.  Crestfallen she declined the offer.  So instead of playing, the youngster engaged her in a conversation.  "So why are you seeing Dr. Dan," the little girl asked.  "Are you sick."

"No, I have ringworm," she replied.  The entire office erupted in silence.  I swear I could feel  each person slowly inch away from my daughter and me.

The truth of the matter that the various types of ringworm are caused by just one group of fungus with several different members in it.  The type of fungus that triggers ringworm in your dog isn't that same one that plagues your son with athlete's foot.  But yes -- both of those conditions are considered ringworm.

And maybe even more importantly, both of those conditions are contagious.  So it's not only vital to the person who has the current infection to know how to cure it.  It's essential that you and the rest of the family learn how to prevent another outbreak.  And it's extremely important to learn what you can to prevent it from happening again.

Of course, there are no guarantees in this life.  No one can see that you can guard against another bout of ringworm.  But you can at least have the peace of mind that you've done everything within your power.
