Media Training Questions # 53- Do You Hear What I Hear?

Dec. 20, 2010 - PRLog -- This may be the coolest form of recycling I have ever seen or heard!  Allow me to introduce you to the Bowen Beer Bottle Band and be prepared for they will rock your Christmas Carol world!

This is a real band and most of the band members are musicians.  So how did this happen?  This is their story according to their website:

“Most good ideas are either thought of on a road-trip or on the toilet…luckily, for sanitary reasons, this one was conceived on the road.  Matt and Summer were driving up the California coast when their baby fell asleep for a couple of hours, leaving them to have a thoughtful conversation.  A few years ago, they started the tradition of recording a Christmas carol each year, just for fun (see www.mattbowenmusic.com/HCSC for example).  They started thinking about something “different” to do, when Summer simply said “Wouldn’t it be cool to play a Christmas carol on beer bottles?!”  About an hour of brainstorming later, the idea and all the logistics were solidified.  We knew we couldn’t pull it off ourselves, and we knew it had to be videotaped without an edit…otherwise, nobody would believe it was real (some people still don’t for whatever reason!).  And so, the Bowen Beer Bottle Band was born!”

They have become quite a sensation for obvious reasons and their YouTube page has plenty more to offer, if you are so inclined.

This may be the most creative way of creating green (or brown) technology I have seen to date and what fun it is.

Of the many things that attracted me to this post today was just a general interest in all things weird, and this fits that category quite well.  But I love the idea and the creativity and reinforce my belief that messages come in many forms beyond words.  Clearly this is one of those oddities that bring people together and the viral aspect of this is awesome mostly because all the profits from the Bowen Beer Bottle Band T-Shirts they sell on their website will go to Education Through Music a non-profit organization that funds music classes for inner city youth in Los Angeles. Their immediate goal is to raise $1000 which will send 15 kids to music class for one semester.  Quite worthy indeed.

I have another Christmas message coming to you later this week but when I ran across this entertaining bit this morning I just had to share it and I hope you will share it as well.  

And lastly, for me anyway, this is one of those things were I watched it said to myself, “why didn’t I think of this”.   Oh well, maybe I’ll come up with the next best thing but for now enjoy the melodic beer bottle tones of the Bowen Beer Bottle Band and Happy Holidays!
