Nelson Education Presents Beacon School Teacher with $5000 Cheque in Nelson School Central Giveaway

Dec. 13, 2010 - PRLog -- Toronto, ON  — Nelson Education Ltd. is pleased to announce the first winner of the Nelson School Central $5000 giveaway, created to celebrate the launch of NelsonSchoolCentral.com. Amy Shanley, a teacher at Rideau High School, a Beacon school in the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board, was selected as the lucky recipient in the first of five random draws. Rideau High School Principal Geordie Walker accepted the cheque on behalf of Shanley, who was unavailable for the presentation.

Beacon Schools for Success designate schools with greater need, and are often located in underprivileged neighbourhoods. "Many of the students at Rideau High School face financial challenges," said Shanley, who was extremely moved when she first learned the news over the phone. "[This money will help] further learning in the form of classroom tools for students and teachers, [as well as] experiential learning opportunities."

Shanley’s plans for the winnings include: a tenor sax for a new band program; geography, history and travel textbooks and teacher guides; novels and plays for the English department; tickets and transportation to the Diefenbunker: Canada's Cold War Museum; a professional speaker’s podium for a Presentation Skills Course; and hi-tech tools for the Parenting and Real Baby course, including an electronic baby.
