O2 Media’s Morning Show The Balancing Act Features: Easy Hydro-Farming Solutions from The Big Tomato

(Pompano Beach, FL – December 2010)  Hydroponics, or hydro-farming, is a “growing” hobby that allows gardening enthusiasts to cultivate plants in any environment, all year long.  The technique makes it possible to harvest fresh vegetables in the middle of winter, allows easy gardening in an urban environment, and even helps provide food for astronauts aboard the space station.  What’s more, according to Jeremy Stout and Josh Field from hydroponic supplier The Big Tomato, getting started does not require a great deal of space, tools, or even technical knowledge.  Tune in to The Balancing Act December 17th at 7:00 am (ET/PT) on Lifetime Television to hear the two long-time growers discuss the benefits of this fascinating indoor gardening technique.

Since hydro-farming involves growing plants without soil, many newcomers to the craft are curious as to how much water will be required.  Hydroponic gardens, although dependent on a mixture of water and minerals to grow, actually wind up using less fluid than traditional soil gardens.  They also produce a higher yield over a shorter time, and help protect us from food diseases.  Growers can even easily cultivate organic crops using hydroponic methods.

“Hydro-farming has very few limitations,” Field says.  “It allows year round growing in any climate, day or night, in little space, with less water… from the remote North Pole to the suburbs of Denver, to the most densely populated places like New York City.  The Balancing Act is a great opportunity to educate viewers on the benefits of hydroponics and share with them our passion for this rewarding style of gardening.”

Besides its obvious practical appeal, hydro-farming also fulfills a deep, internal need we all have to take care of ourselves at the most basic level, Stout theorizes.  “Most adults my age don’t know where their food comes from,” he says.  “We’ve lost that connection between earth and plate, but hydro-farming allows us to once again gain control over what we eat.”

Doug Campbell, Founder and Executive VP of Programming for The Balancing Act says “Having Jeremy Stout and Josh Field from The Big Tomato on the show has brought yet another great solution to viewers, one that will have a real impact, and help them balance their lives.  This is the essence of solutions-based programming, and we are proud that we could bring this innovative concept to our viewers.”
