Marre’s list of Giving is Winning companies comes from research he is conducting with Clemson University and the University of California San Diego called 21 Companies for the 21st Century (  The research is examining what successful companies are doing in today’s challenging environment that average companies are not and has led him to develop an engaging leadership development series, “Apple to Zappos.”  

Clifbar, contends Marre, is a great example of how giving at the core of business can lead to success.  While Clifbar is passionately dedicated to making the best energy bar on the market with organic ingredients (since 2003 they’ve purchased nearly 100 million pounds of organic food), free of transfats, hydrogenated oils, and high fructose corn syrup, they seem to be just as dedicated to their values.  Their five aspirations are sustaining our planet, sustaining our community, sustaining our people, sustaining our business, and sustaining our brands.   This strategy has also led Clifbar to experience phenomenal growth with revenue in 2009 exceeding $235 million.
