How many sliders does it take to counter the effects of two-for-one drafts night at the corner pub?

Think you can you handle two Sidecars from the hipster speakeasy without eating a real meal beforehand?

Did you take an antihistamine with your glass of wine at dinner?

It all adds up. Even a little means a lot. A Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) of.08g/dL is all it takes to get you arrested on a drunk driving infraction. But a BAC of.04g/dL is all it takes to impair your brain function. So, before that after-work cocktail, check out this blood alcohol content chart and double check your assumptions. If you have no designated driver, it might be best to wait and have happy hour at home.

This Friday, law enforcement organizations nationwide will start a three-week crackdown on impaired driving. Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest is the 2010 Labor Day Impaired Driving Prevention National Enforcement Crackdown lead by the National Highway Transportation Safety Association (NHTSA). Drunk driving crashes have decreased over the last few years, but the NHTSA still sees room for improvement. Nationally, 32% of fatal car accidents and other vehicle crashes involve a driver with a blood alcohol level at.08g/dL or higher. That means, in the United States, there is one drunk driving-related fatal car accident every 45 minutes. An estimated 12,000 people died in DUI crashes in 2008, says the NHTSA. Of course, Metro Nashville police always have an eye out for travelers who are Driving Under the Influence (DUI), the latest traffic statistics show that when a concentrated effort is made to catch drunk drivers, it really pays off. The Metro Nashville Police Department reports that fatal motor vehicle-related crashes decreased for the third year in a row in 2008. Correspondingly, DUI arrests increased by 12.2%.

There are people from every age bracket who drink and drive. But the age group with the highest number of alcohol-impaired drivers involved with fatal crashes is 21-24 years old. Approximately 80,000 Nashville residents fall into that age range.

In part because of our youth, Nashvillians love to take to the streets on motorcycles and scooters. It's a misconception to think, though, that driving a two-wheeled vehicle is any less dangerous than driving a passenger vehicle while drunk. Alcohol adversely affects the skills essential to operating a motorcycle: balance and coordination. Motorcycle riders under the influence of alcohol are the drivers most likely to be killed in a fatal car accident. More stats from the NHTSA:

The percentage of drivers with a BAC of.08 or above involved in fatal crashes in 2008 was highest for motorcycle riders (29%), followed by drivers of light trucks (23%) and passenger cars (23%).

43% of the 2,291 motorcycle riders who died in single-vehicle crashes had a BAC of.08 or above.

The age groups of 45-49 and 40-45 years old had the highest percentage (41%) of impaired motorcycle riders (those with a BAC of.08 or higher) killed in fatal crashes.

The drunk driving prevention campaign runs Aug. 20 to Sept. 6 - make it an opportunity to remind coworkers, children, parents and neighbors just how dangerous it is to drive any vehicle after drinking any amount of alcohol.
