Dec. 7, 2010 - PRLog -- BMI's latest update on Uganda's telecommunications market contains an analysis of the country's mobile, fixed-line and broadband markets. This quarter has seen some notable changes to our forecasts for the three sectors, which are extended to 2015. We have also added forecasts for the 3G market to our mobile subscriber growth forecast for the first time. Our new forecasts are based on year-end data published by the country's telecoms regulator, the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), and also incorporate data published by two of Uganda's mobile network operators, specifically, MTN Uganda, part of South Africa's MTN Group, and Orange Uganda, owned by France Telecom.

Based on available data, we estimate that Uganda's mobile subscriber base grew by 8.7% over Q210, to just over 12.5mn at the end of June. This was a significant improvement on the 3.6% growth in Q110, and market contractions experienced during Q409. According to local media reports, Warid Telecom experienced strong customer growth in the H110, fuelled by the introduction of new services and promotions. Market leader MTN and fifth operator Orange reported positive subscriber in the first half of the year with net additions of 697,000 and 72,000 respectively. Going forward, we cautiously predict that Uganda's mobile subscriber base will expand by 23% in 2010, to surpass 13mn at the end of the year. Although compulsory SIM registration may result in a fall in mobile customers, lower tariffs, fuelled by increasing competition and cuts to interconnection rates among operators should help to promote underlying growth. In our previous report, we predicted the intensification of a new price war between the operators, especially with the acquisition of Zain by India's Bharti Airtel. This has proved true with Q310 seeing price cuts by all five operators in a bid to attract new customers.

We have added 3G market forcasts for the first time this quarter. UTL pioneered 3G services in Uganda, but is now facing increasing competition from rival operators. The launch of 3G services by MTN and Orange has helped to stimulate this much-neglected segment of Uganda's mobile market. In July 2010, MTN Uganda revealed that China's Huawei Technologies had completed the deployment of a 3.5G network for the operator. MTN already offers 3G-compatible handsets to its customers including the BlackBerry, while Orange has been targeting the high end of the 3G market with the distribution of the iPhone. Zain and Warid are believed to be making plans to roll out 3G networks.

Uganda's fixed-telephony sector experienced positive growth in the first three months of 2010 with both fixed-line connections and payphones recording impressive net additions. We, therefore, continue to maintain a positive outlook for the fixed line sector in Uganda. We anticipate that the market will grow by around 22% in 2010 to reach the 400,000 mark. By the end of 2015, we expect to see around 655,000 fixed lines in service in Uganda, reflecting a penetration rate of 1.6%.
