Mr. Morvillo, a member of South Nassau’s board of directors, was the Carnation Ball’s honoree. Ms. Mooney was presented South Nassau’s prestigious Mary Pearson Award. South Nassau administrators, board members and medical staff members, as well as many of the region’s healthcare executives, state and local public officials and business and community leaders were among the more than 700 guests who attended the event.
“The leadership provided by Mr. Morvillo and Ms. Mooney and their commitment to service excellence have been vital to South Nassau’s ongoing expansion to meet the healthcare needs of the patients and communities we serve,” said Joseph A. Quagliata, president and CEO of South Nassau. “On behalf of the communities and patients that turn to South Nassau for the quality healthcare that they deserve, I thank them for their loyalty and dedication to South Nassau’s mission.”
The annual Ball raised more than $750,000, a record for the event. The money will support South Nassau’s Center for Advanced Orthopedics and Long Island Joint Replacement Institute. “We are thankful for the many generous and benevolent sponsors, including Exclusive Ball Sponsor Orlin & Cohen Orthopedic Group, and the devoted efforts of the Carnation Ball Committee and volunteers,”
The Carnation Ball honoree is recognized for exemplary leadership and contributions in support of South Nassau’s mission to provide cost-effective, high-quality healthcare. Mr. Morvillo has served on South Nassau’s board directors since 2004 and his support and generosity have helped South Nassau continue to achieve unprecedented growth despite a tumultuous economy for New York’s hospitals. This is highlighted by:
- the opening of South Nassau’s Center for Cardiovascular Health and Center for Advanced Orthopedics and Long Island Joint Replacement Institute;
- the introduction of state-of-the art medical technologies such as the Varian Novalis Tx (the medical industry’s most advanced radiosurgery system), the da Vinci Robotic Surgical System and advanced medical treatments including minimally-invasive joint replacement surgery, laparoscopic weight-loss surgery and elective angioplasty.
A resident of Rockville Centre, Mr. Morvillo is a member of the New York City law firm of Morvillo, Abramowitz, Grand, Iason, Anello & Bohrer, PC. Recognized as one of the most experienced defense attorneys in the country, Mr. Morvillo received the New York Council of Defense Lawyers’ Norman Ostrow Award for significant contribution to the defense function in March 2000, and is listed in Chambers USA – America’s Leading Lawyers for Business, The Best Lawyers in America, and New York Magazine – The New York Area’s Best Lawyers. He was also included among the Top 10 lawyers in New York Super Lawyers – Manhattan Edition and was named Business Crime Lawyer of 2006 by The International Who’s Who of Business Lawyers.
South Nassau’s Mary Pearson Award is presented annually to an individual for extraordinary effort and individual contributions that significantly advance South Nassau’s commitment to compassionate care and standard setting healthcare services. Since joining South Nassau in 1977, Ms. Mooney has been the architect of numerous initiatives and strategies that have made South Nassau nurses a paragon in providing compassionate, patient-centered bedside care and established an environment that supports the professional development of its nursing staff.
Under Ms. Mooney’s leadership, South Nassau has established many unique staff positions that have enhanced the standard-setting patient care that it provides. In 1991, Ms. Mooney spearheaded the launching of South Nassau’s eight-week, 300-hour clinical nurse intern program that has served as the springboard to successful careers for more than 500 nursing candidates. Because of Ms. Mooney’s efforts, the hospital also offers OR Training and ED Fellowship programs as well as a host of competency-based and evidence-based programs for all levels of staff to promote continuous learning and development.
As a result of Ms. Mooney’s vision and acumen, South Nassau has been in the vanguard of nurse recruitment and retention. She developed a plan that focused on recruiting beyond the borders of the U.S. to parts of the world rich in nursing talent that had assimilated the education and training of U.S. nurses. Talent retention initiatives implemented by Ms. Mooney at South Nassau include Retention Rounds, Certification Pay, and R.N. Preceptor Pay, Annual Nursing Excellence Award Ceremony, Annual Nurses Day Celebration, and the establishment of a Nursing Honors Council which celebrates staff achievements and nominates applicable nurses for awards.
