By: Grantham University/Johanna Altland “It is an honor to award these scholarships to such a deserving group,” said Johanna Altland, director of communications at Grantham University and chair of the University’s IAF Scholarship Committee. “Each of these recipients has served or is serving in our nation’s armed forces, and it is an honor to give back to those who have given so much and to continue the University’s tradition of meeting the educational needs of service members and veterans.” For the last five years, Grantham University has participated in the Imagine America Foundation’s Military Award Program (MAP) and through this program has awarded $34,000 in scholarships to qualified active duty service members, reservists, guardsmen, and veterans. Applicants were required to complete an essay on the topic, “Why should you receive a Grantham University IAF Military Award Program scholarship?” Gerald Colley, a 10-year veteran of the U.S. Army and a soldier in the New Jersey National Guard, is pursuing a Master of Healthcare Administration degree at Grantham University because it will provide him with the necessary credentials to perform his job at an advanced skill level. His plans for the future include establishing the New Life Medical Facility, a non-profit medical facility dedicated to improving medical support, health programs, and scientific research for his community. Matt Gromann, who is currently serving in the U.S. Navy, enjoys the convenience of distance learning. “It affords me the flexibility to complete courses any time, even when my schedule changes from day to day,” he said. Gromann plans to complete a Bachelor of Science degree while he is currently home on shore duty. U.S. Air Force Reservist Rene Valdes is determined to complete his Bachelor of Science in Electronics Engineering Technology before May 2013. This motivation is what drove him to seek additional funding on top of his military tuition assistance, so he can complete even more online courses each term at Grantham. Valdes chose Grantham University because of the ability to set his own schedule. “With the added responsibilities of my adult life, distance learning fits in quite well,” he said. Grantham’s 100% online degree programs allow students to access their coursework when and where it is convenient for them, so they can fit education into their lives instead of arranging their lives around education.
