This does not mean that VSI 50 is off the agenda in NSW but merely that it is dormant while attempts are made to have it adopted at the federal level. This avoids negotiating with 4WD NSW&ACT who had expressed objections to any restricted registration for vehicles lifted above 50mm. Remember it is the RTA that represents NSW in NCOP discussions, not user groups like 4WD NSW&ACT. This cessation of negotiation is a breach of the undertaking by the former Minister who had insisted on a confidentiality clause as the price of admission to the consultation. Moving the issue to the federal level is not the best outcome for any NSW 4WDer. As our earlier press release attached indicates, we opposed the attempt to place restrictions on all vehicles above the 50mm height, as unjustified on the evidence available today. Articles in a national magazine stating “2in LIFT & 33s THE ULTIMATE SET-UP” and that this enabled 4WDs to “DRIVE ANYWHERE IN AUSTRALIA" reinforced the RTA's intention to restrict registration for vehicles with more than a 2” or 50mm lift. This undermined our efforts to convince the RTA not to restrict registration for lifts over 50mm. While we believe that the shadow Minister’s mail out, reproduced below, was no doubt, in all good intent, it fails to recognise the above facts and may further undermine the possibility of limiting the restrictions on modifications to vehicles over 50mm. This may have serious consequences for travel in remote areas and difficult terrain. 4WD NSW&ACT will continue to effectively represent the interests of all 4WDers without hysteria and in a consistent and purposeful way. I urge all 4WDers to carefully consider the facts and join an affiliated 4WD Club so that your voice can be heard where it counts.
