For the ninth year in a row, Jacksonville University earns a bid to the National SAFECON which will be held this May 2011, at Ohio State University in Columbus, OH.  JU will compete against the top 30 teams in the nation.   Jacksonville University’s second place finish in the ground and flight events elevates the team in collegiate aviation’s Southeast Region. Broward College took fifth place in the competition In addition to team awards, JU’s own Captains’ Sarah Morris and Michael Todd ranked 2nd and 3rd TOP PILOTS in the region.  JU and Aerosim Flight Academy were equally honored when Morris ranked ALL-AROUND TOP FEMALE contestant, earning the most points among women in the entire competition.

The JU team was led by advisors Prof. Jeff Harrison, Dr. Rhett Yates, and coached by Brent Knoblauch.  Team captain Michael Todd and Co-captain Sarah Morris led the team of 15 members. Broward College was the top scoring 2-year college with Captain Jay Bisher leading a team of 15.

“The team’s success is the result of the hard work and dedication of team advisors and members,” said Juan Merkt, director of JU’s Davis Aviation Center in the Davis College of Business. “Their success also speaks volumes for the quality of the flight training that students receive at JU through Aerosim Flight Academy. The JU Team is indebted to its sponsors Michael McKenny, Ed Dulik, the Jacksonville University Aviation Advisory Board, and Aerosim Flight Academy.  This feat would not have been possible without their continued generous support.”

Jacksonville University’s Davis Aviation Center has been preparing students for business careers in the aviation industry for more than 25 years. In 1996, Jacksonville University established a one-of-a-kind training partnership with an airline’s training center, Aerosim Flight Academy (formerly Delta Connection Academy), to educate and train future airline pilots. For over 30 years, Broward College has offered the Professional Pilot Technology Program as one of its aviation curriculum within the Broward College Aviation Institute. Aerosim Flight Academy has served as its flight vendor for more than 10 years.
