2011 Elantra Is Showing Off Its New Features

Hyundai Motor America gives us all the little details for the all-new 2011 Hyundai Elantra.

Nov. 23, 2010 - PRLog -- As Hyundai’s last vehicle to be introduced for the upcoming year, the 2011 Hyundai Elantra is raising the standards for compact cars. The debut of this compact sedan was at the LA Auto Show this past weekend and raised some eyebrows during the reveal.

Hyundai says the “2011 Elantra encompasses Hyundai’s latest ambitions including ‘Fluidic Sculpture’ design, advanced safety and fuel efficiency.”

Unlike other compacts, the Elantra designers sought for a more modern approach on the vehicles look, feel and comfort-ability. Many of the designers sought to answer four questions when creating this fifth generation Elantra:

1.   Why can’t a compact car have a modern, sleek, sophisticated style?
2.   Why pay luxury car prices to get advanced safety features?
3.   Why buy a mid-size sedan when you can get exceptional room in a compact car?
4.   Why can’t a compact car get subcompact car fuel economy?

After answering these questions, Hyundai engineers and designers came up with a new standard for the compact car market with the all-new 2011 Hyundai Elantra.

Highlights of the 2011 Elantra:

•   All-new fifth generation Elantra compact sedan
•   “Fluidic Sculpture” design
•   Launches with new 1.8-liter “Nu” engine and in-house six-speed automatic transmission
•   40 mpg highway on all models with A/T or M/T
•   Best-in-class standard fuel economy
•   Improved fuel efficiency by up to 18 percent over its predecessor
•   More fuel efficient than Honda Civic and Toyota Corolla
•   Production began at Hyundai Motor Manufacturing Alabama in November with shipments to dealers before year-end
•   “Class-above” mid-size car interior volume
•   Standard VSM, ESC, TCS, ABS with Brake Assist and EBD

Hyundai’s ‘Fluidic Sculpture” design

Hyundai engineers considered the interplay of wind and wanted to create the illusion of constant motion, much like the design qualities of the Sonata so they came up with the ‘Fluidic Sculpture.’ This design gives the Elantra a compact athletic face with an assertive stance along with the long, flowing lines much like the Sonata.

40 MPG Powertrain

After the design elements were in place the next thing on the agenda was to raise the MPG through the powertrain and Hyundai engineers succeeded with a 40 MPG Powertrain, an 18 percent improvement in fuel economy from the previous Elantra models.

Under the hood of the Elantra is the featured 1.8-liter Nu four-cylinder engine with 148 hp and 131 lb-ft of torque giving the Elalntra a fuel economy of 29 mpg city and 40 mpg highway with the six-speed automatic transmission or manual transmission.

This Nu engine features an aluminum block with a cast iron cylinder liner, cylinder head and crank giving the Elantra a 30 percent lighter block than the iron block shedding more than 74 pounds off the entire engine weight.

Safety Features

Safety, always on our minds when shopping for the perfect vehicle, has been taken to the next level in the all-new Elantra with the introduction of Vehicle Stability Management (SM) with is similar to the one found in the Hyundai Equus. VSM manages the Electronic Stability Control (ESM) and the Motor-Driven electric Power steering (MDPS).

Along with the VSM feature, the Elantra has six featured air bags: duel front, front seat-mounted side-impact and front and rear side curtain airbags and includes a state-of-the-art braking package with four-wheel disc brakes and an Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) including Brake Assist and Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD).

The 2011 Elantra is an affordable and comfortable vehicle that makes for the perfect family car focusing more on performance, practicality and safety. Offering one of the most comfortable and spacious cabins in the small car class, the Elantra is well worth a look. Because it is so roomy, it works well as a starter car, affordable and comfortable, with a good-sized trunk for storage.
