Nov. 23, 2010 - PRLog -- “Identity theft is a pandemic. More than one third of the world’s population has been exposed,” says Mark Priganc, the author of Identity Theft: Surviving The Nightmare.

Identity Theft complaints spike between Thanksgiving and Christmas.  This is because people are more focused on getting their shopping finished than they are on protecting their personal information.

First tip, only carry one credit card and a photo ID.  Keep these two items in your front pocket, or ‘very close to you’.  You can strengthen this tip by designating one specific card for all of your Christmas shopping.

Next, have you noticed anyone standing close to you in line at the checkout?  Like really close; like 'they want to get to know you'.  In actuality, they may be getting to know you.  They could be shoulder surfing.  What this term means is that they are 'looking' over your shoulder.  This tactic is more common than you think.  Their target is your credit card or check while you have them out for your purchase.  Cover those items up.

Finally, when shopping online, you should have one credit card designated for this use only.  Reason being, it is much easier to scrutinize every charge on that card and dispute any charge that is not recognized.  Explore the possibilities of a pre-paid credit card for online use.  The amount a thief could get is limited to what you have on the card.  Only recharge the card for purchases you know you are going to make.

“I met author and Identity Theft expert, Mark Priganc, for the first time in broad daylight at a Krispy Kreme doughnut shop.  Even though we were surrounded by senior citizens having their morning coffee, in five minutes Mark had me scared to speak above a whisper.  His knowledge of the ways our personal information can be used by bumbling petty thieves, computer hackers, international cyber criminals or even terrorists is frightening.  You MUST hear his message first hand.”
