Nov. 16, 2010 - PRLog -- ST. LOUIS, MO—As thousands of St. Louis area Boy Scouts and volunteers prepare for the largest one-day food drive in America on Nov. 20, 2010, Sunset Transportation, a St. Louis-based third party logistics company, encourages other St. Louis-area businesses to support this important community event.

“We encourage everyone in the metro area to fill the Scouting for Food bags this week and give to help make our community stronger,” said Jim Williams, CEO of Sunset Transportation. “For the past seven years, we’ve been fortunate to be involved behind the scenes and see first-hand how much benefit and help the Boy Scouts and other volunteers are contributing to those in need.”

On Saturday, Nov. 13, approximately 30,000 Boy Scouts delivered 1 million bags to houses all over the greater St. Louis area for residents to use as they donate canned goods.

On the following Saturday, Nov. 20, Boy Scouts will return to collect those bags and take them to 46 local fire stations, where Sunset Transportation has organized a volunteer fleet of over 50 tractor trailer trucks to pick up the expected 2.2 million pounds of food and transport it to the St. Louis Food Bank. The donated food will then be distributed throughout St. Louis to feed the hungry for several months.

“The St. Louis Area Foodbank’s network of pantries continues to report record requests for food assistance,” said Frank Finnegan, executive director of the St. Louis Area Foodbank (http://www.stlfoodbank.org). “Many pantries are having difficulty meeting the demand from so many people who have never needed help in the past. Scouting for Food is not just another food drive, it’s the largest food drive in the entire country—no one collects more food than our local Boy Scout Council—and this year we need them more than ever.”

Sunset Transportation began handling logistics for Scouting for Food seven years ago when the U.S. Army was deployed to Iraq and could no longer provide transportation and logistics support for the Boy Scouts. This year, Sunset will transport 55 truckloads of food in cooperation with dozens of truck drivers who donate their time, use their own trucks, and pay for their own fuel.
