Cost Effective Antibiotic Honey Screening - A 'Sweet Investment'

Honey is considered a natural and healthy product. Traditionally considered pure and free from contaminants, this food group has come under intensive scrutiny following recent food scares where antibiotic drug residues were found in imported honey.

Nov. 12, 2010 - PRLog -- In recent years, antibiotic drugs have been used in apiculture to prevent the spread of the Foulbrood diseases in both America and Europe as a preventative or therapeutic treatment in the protection of apiaries.
Due to the risks posed by these antibiotics to human health, their use in apiculture is now globally restricted or banned. The use of antibiotics in    the food chain greatly increases the risk of antibiotic resistant bacteria for humans. Monitoring the honey for the presence of Sulphonamides,    Nitrofurans, Amphenicols, Quinolones and other antibiotic drugs is crucial in ensuring good quality honey is produced.
In order to meet legislative requirements, industry authorities and research laboratories need rapid and sensitive screening methods for the detection    of these drug residues. To meet this global demand, Randox offers the world's only multi-analyte semi quantitative Drug Residue analyser; the Evidence Investigator. The multiplex platform we have developed means we can simultaneously detect a wide range of antibiotic residues (tetracyclines, sulphonamides, quinolones, streptomycin, tylosin, nitrofurans and chloramphenicol) from a single honey sample. The excellent generic nature of our    antibodies also allows detection of 10 different tetracycline compounds and 14 quinolone compounds.
This multiplex testing format reduces cost, run time and labour requirements and guarantees faster turnaround time for results and a higher throughput    (675 tests in under 2 hours). Our comprehensive test menu allows for the consolidation of laboratory testing on to one platform, and with up to 65 new drug residue antibodies in development we can guarantee faster adaptability to the new regulations for this marketplace.
Randox Antimicrobial Arrays I, II & III along with a wide range of ELISA screening kits offer a comprehensive screening package for antibiotics in honey. These screening solutions all offer excellent limit of detections along with a simple sample preparation.
Screening Test Menu includes:-
Sulphonamides
Chloramphenicol
Tetracycline
Nitrofurans
Streptomycin
Tylosin
Quinolones
Beta Lactam
