Asia is home to some of the most lavish and elaborate palaces and castles in the world. Architecture and history fans love studying the interpretations of nature, historic events and holy statues in stone, wood or metals as these aesthetic works of art amaze all visitors.

China
Summer Palace in Beijing was first built in 1750 and restored in 1886 is a masterpiece of Chinese landscape garden design. Named a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1998, the natural landscape of hills and open water is combined with artificial features such as pavilions, halls, palaces, temples and bridges to form a harmonious ensemble of outstanding aesthetic value.

Hong Kong
Hong Kong’s Chi Lin Nunnery exemplifies artistic craftsmanship from the Tang Dynasty, said to contain not a single nail in its construction.  Sitting atop Diamond Hill, this gorgeous replica built in 2000 opens its doors to visitors to tour the beautiful Chinese gardens and impressive architecture of its 7 wood-frame buildings.  Be lulled into a state of meditation amidst sounds of rushing waterfalls and the chanting of shaven-headed nuns.

Japan
Kinkaku-ji, or the Golden Pavilion, and its reflecting image on the adjoining "mirror pond" is a breathtaking must-see. This three-tiered building is a rare construction with each successive tier designed in a different style. The building's original purpose was to serve the retirement residence of Shogun Ashikaga Yoshimitsu who ruled from 1368 to 1394 and died in 1409. The gold-leaf-adorned structure was converted into a Zen temple shortly after his death.

Korea
Built in 1405, Changdeokgung Palace was the residential palace of the Joseon dynasty. Through generations, the royal family used its facilities for recreational purposes. Biwon (Secret Garden), which is the rear garden of the palace, is a very unique attraction both in terms of history and architectural landscape. In 1997 UNESCO registered the palace as a World Cultural Heritage Site.

Macau
Kuan Tai Temple, also known as Sam Kai Vui Kun, has been located on the site of the old bazaar near Senado Square and Rua dos Mercadores for over two centuries. Originally, it was a meeting place for merchants, and the surrounding area - Rua dos Mercadores, Rua dos Ervanários and Rua das Estalagens - served as the centre of trading in the city. In later years, a statue commemorating Kuan Tai was placed at Sam Kai Vui Kun, attracting many devotees

Philippines
The Philippines’ Coconut Palace, which is part of the Cultural Center Complex on the famed Manila Bay, is an example of fine Filipino craftsmanship and ingenuity in making full use of available natural resources. Constructed in 1978, the octagon-shaped palace boasts striking design elements utilizing select Philippine hardwood and specially engineered lumber and other materials derived from coconut. The palace is capped with a roof formed as a traditional Filipino farmer’s “Salakot” hat and houses rooms showcasing unique products from the country’s regions amidst displays of intricate coconut chandeliers and furniture delicately inlaid with coconut shells. It is a favorite venue for romantic weddings and other elegant receptions.

Singapore
Make a quick stop at the Sri Mariamman Temple, Singapore's oldest Hindu temple dating back to 1827. Located in Chinatown, the temple is dedicated to the Goddess Mariamman, known for her power to cure epidemic illnesses and diseases. Visitors are amazed by the majestic gopuram (gate tower), which is covered with figurative sculptures of gods, goddesses and mythological beasts, an easily recognizable landmark for generations of Hindu worshippers and Singaporeans alike.

Thailand
The magnificent Wat Phra Kaeo, a treasure trove of Thai arts and home to the Emerald Buddha, Thailand’s most revered Buddha image, is at the heart of this complex. However, there is much else of interest to be seen in the Grand Palace compound, such as the Royal Thai Decorations and Coin Pavilion, where a permanent exhibition of royal regalia, decorations, medals and coins dating back to the early 11th century is on display.
