The Michigan Chapter of the National Private Duty Association clebrates National Home Care Month by honoring the important- and inspirational- role of the professional caregiver through their Michigan Caregiver of the Year Award.

Nov. 11, 2010 - PRLog -- Novi, Michigan, November 11, 2010:  An estimated 8.5 million people over the age of 70 in America need help with driving, household chores, dressing, and preparing meals according to the National Academy on Aging.   When family members are not available, or unable to provide this assistance, many are able to remain in their home with the help of professional caregivers provided by home care agencies.  With November being  National Home Care month, the Michigan Chapter of the National Private Duty Association (NPDA) has created an annual award to honor Michigan professional caregivers that exemplify the highest standards of care, compassion and professional knowledge, and consistently demonstrate their commitment and passion for their chosen career as a caregiver.

“I can’t think of a group more deserving of recognition than professional caregivers,” states Russ Knopp, president of the Michigan Chapter of NPDA and owner of Comfort Keepers in Traverse City.  “For many of these individuals, it’s not about the money. They are in this field of work because this is their calling. Their training, experience and expertise often provides an important link between their clients, their clients’ family and other members of the health care team, allowing their client’s to live safely at home. They are the real “heroes’ in their client’s eyes.”

The recipient of “Caregiver of the Year Award” will be chosen among eight finalists from three different regions in Michigan.  To be eligible for the award, caregivers must be professionally employed and nominated by a home care agency that is a member of the National Private Duty Association.  The winner will receive a cash award, plaque and will be honored in an awards ceremony in Lansing at the Michigan Chamber of Commerce on November 19th, 2010 at 11:30 am with legislators and other community leaders in attendance.
