Nov. 10, 2010 - PRLog -- Philadelphia, PA – November 10, 2010 – A favorite spot among East Oak Lane locals, the Under The Oak Café, called the ‘Toast (or Scone) of Oak Lane’ by the Philadelphia Inquirer in 2008, has expanded its operations.  Owners Devitt McShain, Kelly McShain Tyree and Robert Tyree recently finished renovations on a large kitchen space adjacent to its charming café.  “We’ve earned a great reputation for our scones, quiches and pastries, and are now ready to take the café to the next level” says Kelly.  “We’re very excited about the expansion”.

They brought in a French-trained chef, David Salvatore, who will lead a series of 10 different hands-on cooking classes as well as weekly BYOB farm-to-table chef’s dinners on Friday nights.  In addition, the café and chef’s table can be rented out for on-premise events, such as a private dinner for 12 or a reception with butlered hors d’oeuvres for up to 75.  Chef Salvatore likes to use the term ‘hand-crafted’ to describe his approach to cooking.  “We’re not into molecular gastronomy”, he said.  “I prefer classical technique, applied to sustainable and farm-fresh ingredients”.

The café also does a bustling retail and wholesale business.  Their quiche is served at the White Dog Café, and their pies, scones and pastries can be found at the Weaver’s Way co-op and at farmer’s markets throughout the city.  Everything they do is hand-made from scratch with top-quality ingredients like organic turbinado sugar, Wagyu beef and locally grown lettuces from Streamside Farms, located just 5 minutes from the café.

The owners, who have contributed substantially to the development of the local community, are committed to supporting a thriving local economy and the betterment of the neighborhood.  They are active in such organizations as the Horticultural Society, the Oak Lane Beautification Committee, Oak Lane Tree Tenders and many other community organizations.

Reservations for cooking classes and chef’s table dinners can only be made through their new website, www.undertheoakcafe.com.
