Nov. 10, 2010 - PRLog -- There are a number of tips to help parents settle their hyperactive child down. Avelina, essential oil website owner,  feels that incorperating essential oils and aromatherapy into these quick tips and relaxation techniques will produce incredibly quick results. Any parent of a hyperactive child would definatlely agree quick is good!

There's lots of essential oils with calming effects, such as Chamomile, Lavender, Patchouli, Sandlewood, Valerian, Lemon Balm, and Vetiver . You can often times find these essential oils in different blends, that are known for their calming effects. Very important though, is to make sure the oils are "pure".  Avelina states that one of her favorite calming blends is called" QuietScent" and is blended by " Be Young Essential Oils".

Below are 5 tips Avelina recommends that have a great success rate in calming a hyperactive child quickly:

Quick Calming Tips:

1. Breathe-Deep breathing is one of the quickest and simplest ways to calm the body. Teach your children to take deep breaths (in through the nose, out through the mouth) when they begin to feel frustrated and out of control. Parents, can do this too!

2. Add Aromatherapy- After a few deep cleansing breaths, pick one or a few of the essential oils mentioned above and have your child  inhale each of the oils deeply (again, in through nose and out through the mouth). Do one nostril at a time. Hold the other closed while inhaling through one. Do this for at least 10 times or as many times as you can get your child to do it.

3 .Massage- If your hyperactive child refuses to inhale the oils or even take deep breaths with the oils- which could very well happen, then  give your child a mini-massage using the oils of your choice. Touch is very important to hyperactive children. Massaging their temples, giving a shoulder rub, rubbing the back of the neck or lightly running your fingers through their hair can calm children quickly.

4. Difffuse-If you can't get your hyperactive child to sit long enough for you to give a mini-massage then you can diffuse the oil of your choice into the air using an  Aromatherapy diffuser. There are other ways to get the oils into the air like putting some in a spray bottle with water and spraying or putting some on a cotton ball by a heater vent, ect.  but a diffuser is the best way.

5.Stay Calm- A great way to help your hyperactive child to calm down, is to make sure you as the parent, are calm, relaxed, and not stressed out. Children are like little sponges and soak up the mood you are in very easily. So take the 4 previous steps--(Breathe deeply, use aromatherpy in your breathing, massage the oils on yourself and diffuse the oils in your home) and apply them to yourself. You will see a diference in your child.

Avelina mentions that in addition to the above tips there are other things a parent can do daily  to calm their hyperacitve child.

Take your child for a walk or run or send them out to take one on their own if they are old enough. Not only does walking burn off excess energy, the repetitive thump, thump,  of feet hitting pavement brings the mind back into focus.

Create a peaceful and  calming home environment. Diffusing calming essential oils and  clearing the clutter by taking a "less is more" approach to decorating your home can reduce the sensory overload on hyperactive children.

Have and follow a fixed  Routine. All children thrive in homes that provide routines, consistency and structure.

Also, a healthy diet is very important. Some parents find that reducing or eliminating sugar from the diet goes a long way in calming the hyperactive child.

Last but not least, at the end of the day, before bed,  a warm bath with a drop or to of your favorite calming essential oils like Lavender, can help to wash away the hyperactive child's stresses of the day and lead to a restful nights sleep.
