Leadership, Integrity & Discipline Focus of Criminal Justice AwardsThe criminal justice field has grown in function and professionalism and Beckfield College has responded with rigorous academics, state-of-the-art equipment for training, and focus on the intangible elements of leadership, integrity and discipline.
By: Suzanne Deatherage Major Prindle described his entry onto the Boone County Police Department, recounting tales about his experience and the challenges and privileges associated with the field of criminal justice. “As I see it, we as practitioners in the Criminal Justice System must do what is right when no one is watching,” Prindle impressed upon everyone in the room. “There will be times that we can make a choice to do the right thing. Doing anything less is unacceptable and compromises our sworn duties as law enforcement officers. Our decisions should always be the same, no matter if the world is watching us or we’re in a position where no one will know what we have done.” The idea of professionalism, pillared by leadership, integrity and discipline was emphasized throughout the evening, as it is impressed upon to each student during each class by every instructor at Beckfield College. “Expectations of people in the field of criminal justice have been elevated to new heights of overview and criticism,” explained Dr. Jack Brown, Dean of Criminal Justice at Beckfield College. “We provide the very best training equipment, most experienced instructors, and rigorous curriculum. But we couple that with the demand for professionalism to the core. These students must display their leadership on the job, showcase integrity in everything they do, and live by discipline that will ensure the public’s trust in them and their departments.” The first award presented for the evening was in honor of Dr. Jack Collins, a Criminal Justice faculty member who passed away in 2009. Both an award and a scholarship were named in his honor. Criminal Justice Instructor Ric Robinson received the Dr. Jack Collins Student Support Award, while student Dy’an Marinos received the scholarship in his name, along with the Student Scholar of the Year Award. It was an emotional night for everyone, including three of Collins’ daughters who were in attendance. “I would like to thank Dr. Jack Brown, the Criminal Justice Department and Beckfield College for honoring my dad, Dr. Jack Collins, at the First Annual Criminal Justice Awards Banquet. My sisters and I were so touched by all the kind words from everyone. He really loved teaching. Dr. Jack Brown was appointed Dean of Criminal Justice and a full Criminal Justice Department was created in August 2008. Currently, the Department offers an associate degree and a bachelor of science degree in Criminal Justice, a certificate in Addictions Counseling, and an associate degree in Criminal Justice with an emphasis in Addictions Counseling. Programs are offered at both the Florence, Kentucky and Tri-County Cincinnati, Ohio campuses.
