99ers and the Unemployed Tell Congress: "Do Your Job, Now!” Plan Non-Violent Civil Disobedience.
99ers will hold a rally in NYC to demand that Congress, in the upcoming lame duck session, extend unemployment insurance for those who have exhausted all benefits and still can't find a job as well as for those whose benefits will expire on 11/30/10.
PRLog -- NY/NJ area 99ers – joined by supporters, and the unemployed who are still receiving unemployment insurance (UI) – will hold a rally at the Dept. of Labor office, 75 Varick Street in Manhattan Friday, Nov 12, 12 -1 pm. They will demand that Congress, in the upcoming lame duck session, do their job for the American people and immediately pass The Americans Want to Work Act (S.3706), as well as re-authorize the unemployment extensions set to expire on November 30th for those currently receiving benefits. As a political statement, 99ers will participate in non-violent civil disobedience and risk arrest because their situation is desperate and they continue to be ignored by elected leaders.
99ers are those who have already exhausted all "99" weeks of UI. They say it is still nearly impossible to find a job and, therefore, an additional 20 weeks (or Tier V), plus incentives for employers to hire the long-term unemployed, must be added while they continue looking for work. Currently there are 4.5 million 99ers, most of whom began losing UI the end of March 2010; with an additional 50,000 jobless Americans losing their UI every week since, some after receiving less than 99 weeks. Many have been without any income for eight months. They have been through retirement savings, maxed out credit cards, lost their homes and cars – and their dignity. 99ers and exhaustees want to work; they want their life back, but need help right now.
Congress granted itself a 13-day "rest" between Election Day and their return on November 15th. 99ers/exhaustees and the unemployed still receiving UI say now that Congress will finally return to work, they must immediately pass Tier V legislation (S.3706), extend UI for current recipients, and pass a comprehensive jobs bill. Hard working American families, who have been the victims of this recession, deserve and demand that Congress do their job and address the real need of Americans, not big banks and corporations.
The rally is sponsored by the group “Flashmobs4jobs"
