Lump On Neck--Is It Thyroid Cancer?

A lump on your neck has to be taken seriously whether it is serious or not.

Nov. 9, 2010 - PRLog -- Although, there are many conditions that may lead to someone having a lump on their neck, thyroid cancer is one of the most serious.  Even though thyroid cancer is relatively rare it affects about 1 in 1000 Americans every year.  There are more women than men, a ratio of three to one, that will be diagnosed with this disease.  Symptoms vary depending which type of the four major types of thyroid cancer it is.  Elaine Savard, who was diagnosed with Papillary Thyroid Cancer in 1997 states that if you have a lump on your neck in the thyroid area, located at the base of the throat, it could be a nodule.  Although almost 99% of these nodules are not cancer, Savard states that this is not a reason to ignore the lump.  Observe your self for a few days as the nodule may be enlarged because of a cold or a virus.  If the lump does not go down, medical attention should be attained to have a physical examination and laboratory test to determine what kind of thyroid nodule it is.  Thyroid cancer symptoms that present first as nodules are usually palpable and not tender and when it goes undetected, it will impede the esophagus or trachea.
When seeking medical attention for a lump on your neck the physician may use the following tests and procedures to determine if you have cancer or if the growth is benign.

A physical exam –  feel уουr neck area fοr lumps аnԁ swelling.
Blood tests – TSH οr thyroid-stimulating hormone levels will bе measured. Thіѕ reveals useful information іn reference tο a prognosis.
Needle biopsy – Thіѕ іѕ the removal of cells frοm thе thyroid gland аnԁ examining thеѕе cells using a microscope tο find thе cancer.
Imaging tests – Thеѕе tests include ultrasound οf thе neck area tο find swollen οr enlarged lymph nodes, to determine  whether the lump on neck has the characteristics of being cancerous.
Savard, whose lump on her neck was found at an annual physical examination, once again wants to stress the importance of self examination and knowing your body.  She has a website www.fucoidanforhealth.com that provides helpful information, from her experiences, for anyone diagnosed with this cancer.
