Park Meadows Surgeons Perform 100th DIEP Flap Breast Reconstruction Procedure

Nov. 9, 2010 - PRLog -- Leading Colorado plastic surgeons Dr. Jeremy Williams and Dr. Christopher Williams have performed their 100th successful DIEP Flap breast reconstruction procedure, it was announced today by Park Meadows Cosmetic Surgery.  According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, less than 4,500 DIEP Flap procedures were performed in the U.S. last year.   With 100 successful DIEP Flap procedures performed, Park Meadows Cosmetic Surgery is among the most experienced practices in the nation offering this advanced breast reconstruction technique.  

DIEP Flap (Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator) breast reconstruction is a complex and innovative technique that uses the patient’s own tissue and skin to reconstruct a natural-looking breast.  With DIEP Flap reconstruction, the surgeon employs muscle-sparing and nerve-sparing techniques to limit damage to donor sites.  Because abdominal muscles are left intact, patients can avoid the prolonged abdominal weakness that may result from other flap techniques, while benefitting from a quicker recovery time after surgery.  Additionally, the removal of skin and fatty tissue during a DIEP Flap procedure results in a flatter abdomen for the patient, similar to a tummy tuck procedure.

In addition to DIEP Flap breast reconstruction, the Park Meadows surgeons also have the expertise and advanced technology necessary to provide a full range of complex breast reconstruction techniques, including the Superficial Inferior Epigastric Artery (SIEA) Flap procedure, which can further limit surgery to the patient’s abdominal wall.  While similar to the DIEP Flap procedure, the SIEA Flap procedure uses blood vessels found in the fatty tissue just below the skin, rather than blood vessels that are below or within the abdominal muscle.  Only a small percentage of patients have anatomy that will support a SIEA Flap procedure, but Park Meadows surgeons have been able to perform four SIEA Flap procedures this year.
