Follow on Google News | What’s all this ear then? Bionic Ear visits innovative school for the deafMary Hare Primary School in Newbury will be playing host to the interactive Bionic Ear Roadshow, from national charity Deafness Research UK on 9 November.
By: BeyondPR The Mary Hare Primary School is an innovative school for the deaf and focuses on an auditory-oral philosophy to support holistic communication skills. The pupils have severe or profound hearing loss and the show will be tailored specifically to this young audience, including helping them to understand how cochlear implants work and what the future of hearing research might bring in terms of new ‘bionic ears’. The show features “the world’s largest ear” and the presenter constructs a model to highlight the different parts of the ear, which is over 22ft long and 116 times the size of a normal human ear. The pupils will learn how the ear works, what can go wrong and what can be done to put things right. The show enables the audience to take part in some fun activities, ensuring that the children enjoy an interactive learning experience. “The children at Mary Hare are an inspiration to everyone,” said Vivienne Michael, Chief Executive of Deafness Research UK. “The school and its staff do an amazing job in helping prepare the children for a life in both the hearing and the deaf worlds, and we are delighted to be bringing the Bionic Ear show to them.” The Bionic Ear Show appeals to all ages (deaf or hearing) and can also include free hearing tests, to encourage people to get their hearing checked and seek support and treatment if needed. With the support of BUPA and the Big Lottery Fund, the 2010 Bionic Ear Show will be coming to a town, city or school near you so please contact Deafness Research UK if you would like the Show to come to your school, community group or event. In launching the campaign, Deafness Research UK is stressing that young people today are at far greater risk of going prematurely deaf than their parents because they are listening to mobile phones and MP3 players at far too loud a volume and far too often. A national survey found that over a third of all 16-34 year olds listened to their MP3 players for more than an hour a day and 14% listened for more than 28 hours a week. It also showed that 54% of people did not realise that listening to loud music on an MP3 player, in a nightclub or at a concert could damage their hearing. More than a third of people who have experienced ringing in their ears after listening to loud music listen to their MP3 player every day. Ringing in the ears, or tinnitus, is a sign of damage to the hearing system. About Mary Hare Primary School Mary Hare Primary School is a non-maintained special school which caters for primary-aged children with severe or profound hearing loss. They accept day and weekly boarding pupils of both sexes into our beautifully situated school on the rural outskirts of Newbury, Berkshire. They welcome enquiries from any family who wants their child to develop their spoken language. They have children from hearing families, deaf families, schools for the deaf, mainstream schools, and units. Some children have very little language on arrival –perhaps only one, or a few words; others have a signing background and the family and child want to develop their oral skills, to be able to live successfully in both deaf and hearing worlds. Other children have significant emotional difficulties because of their experience of failure in mainstream education. All children are exhibiting language delay and the frustrations and unhappiness that this can cause. The school is non-denominational and follows a natural aural philosophy, aiming to produce talking deaf children, regardless of their degree of deafness or ability. Teachers are specialist teachers of the deaf who are committed to this approach and who take every opportunity to make use of whatever residual hearing each child possesses. A significant number of pupils have cochlear implants and the staff have considerable experience of educating and catering for such children.
