Follow on Google News | A Spirit of Entrepreneurship Infects Expatriates in Central Portugal.Central Portugal gets business going with a new sense of camaraderie amongst expatriates and a new willingness to integrate into Portuguese culture.
By: Paul Andrew Stubbs In the last couple of years however a younger crowd has moved there sparking a number of initiatives which despite the financial situation are now starting to take traction and move forward. The businesses range from bars, B&B's, property development, magazines, photography, restaurants business consultancy and estate agents, one of the key differences in central Portugal from other expatriate communities is the percentage of legal businesses being set up. There is also a sense of togetherness and a spirit of help my neighbour and occasionally even help my competitor. Several groups have been set up and are indeed flourishing these groups are helping to bring the community together, enlarge the community and share ideas and strategies among those attending. The majority of these groups have been organised by John Norton and Dorothy Becker of Leaping Ahead. Property is of course one of the biggest driving factors behind the expatriate community the majority of them came here because of the affordability of the property. It is without doubt the most affordable place left in the sun in Europe. The Portugal Property market has a number of illegal agents operating in the past but the new registered estate agents have pretty much seen them off.
