Nov. 6, 2010 - PRLog -- Jil Sander known for her minimalist designs, she became the go-to brand for slim, elegant, tailored creations in a sharp palette in the 90s. There followed an infamous bust up with the CEO of Prada, Patrizio Bertelli, which saw Sander resign twice from designing her own collection.
Jil Sander, born in Wesselburen, Schleswig-Holstein, grew up with her mother and later studied textile design in Krefeld from where she graduated as a textile engineer in 1963. Having spent two years as an exchange student at University of California at Los Angeles, she worked as a fashion editor at German women's magazine Petra before opening her first boutique in a Hamburg suburb in 1967. She started out selling fashion designed by Thierry Mugler or Sonia Rykiel and also a few of her own designs. And, with few ups and downs, she founded her eponymous fashion house, Jil Sander GmbH in 1968.n showing her collection in Paris in 1975 proved a complete failure, though. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, when the fashion world was dominated by lavish, colourful and glitzy Dynasty-style designs by the likes of Claude Montana with his broad-shouldered leather look, Jil Sander's minimalist collections, with a focus on fabric quality came close to a revolution in the fashion world and were not accepted next to the Parisian catwalks. Her style only started gaining attention in the 1990s. After leaving her own house in 2000, she made an unexpected return as head designer in 2003 and her sensational comeback was celebrated with much fanfare. However, she terminated her contract a year and a half later after insurmountable differences with the then-owners the Prada Group. In 2005, Belgian designer Raf Simons took over the reigns as creative director, presenting a slightly tweaked version of the founder’s austere style. German born designer Jil Sander launched her first womenswear collection back in 1973, opening her first Hamburg-based store at just 24 years old. Synonymous with pure, understated fashion the label is closely associated with 1990s minimalism and masculine/feminine looks. Now under the creative charge of Belgian designer, Raf Simons, Jil Sander is celebrated for graphic one-color silhouettes, clean cuts and abstract tailoring. Think sleek white shirts, soft cashmere separates and check wool dresses. Now, after a five year hiatus from the industry, during which her brand has continued without her (designed by Raf Simons since 2005), Sander is back. +J is a high street collaboration with Japanese superstore Uniqlo, which launched recently.
