By: Anand Deepavali (also spelled Divali in few countries) or Diwali, popularly known as the festival of lights, is an important five-day festival in Hinduism, Jainism, and Sikhism, occurring between mid-October and mid-November. Diwali is one of the biggest festival of Hindus, celebrated with great enthusiasm and happiness in India. The festival is celebrated for five continuous days, where the third days is celebrated as the main Diwali festival or 'Festival of lights'. Different colorful varieties of fireworks are always associated with this festival. On this auspicious day, people light up diyas and candles all around their house.Many Hindus start their financial new year on the auspicious occasion of Diwali. Exchanging gifts and wearing new clothes is also synonymous with Diwali- festival of lights. Deepavali is associated with the triumph of good over evil. Diwali symbolizes the triumph of virtue. This festival commemorates Lord Rama's come back to his kingdom Ayodhya after completing his 14-year exile along with his wife Sita and brother Laxman after killing the demon, King Ravana. Bursting different fire crackers form an important part of the Diwali festivities and it's a unique way to express one's happiness and joy. Diwali is celebrated for a period of six days with each day having its own significance. These days significant on the festival of Deepavali are: Dhan teras: Dhan stands for wealth and Trayodashi refers to the 13th day. It is second day of Diwali celebrations and measured as a propitious day for buying utensils and gold. Naraka Chaturdashi: Lakshmi Puja: Lakshmi Puja is the significant and most awaited day of Diwali celebrations in North India. Hindu homes worship Lakshmi, the deity of wealth, and Ganesh, the God of promising beginnings on the occasion of Diwali. Bhai Dooj Bhai Dooj celebration marks the fifth and final day of Diwali Festival. On this day brothers and sisters renew the bond of love shared between them. Sisters' apply sacred red tilak on their brother's forehead and pray for their long life. Brothers reciprocate by blessing their sisters and indulging them with Bhai Dooj Gifts of love. Diwali Rangoli During Diwali, Goddess Lakshmi is believed to visit homes that are well lit, so families decorate their homes. People wear their best clothes or buy new ones, children are given presents and new year greetings are exchanged through visits or Diwali cards. Thus, a Rangoli design is created on doorsteps to welcome everybody. Rangoli exudes a pattern in color that are specific for each region. Time to celebrate According to the Hindu calendar, the festival of Diwali is celebrated on the new moon day that marks the end of Ashwin and beginning of Kartik month.
