Talent Management Talks Plus-size Modelling

Europe’s leading modelling agency, Talent Management, discusses how the perception of plus-size models has changed in recent times

Nov. 5, 2010 - PRLog -- With Marc Jacobs’ President, Robert Duffy, recently revealing early-stage plans to produce a plus-size range, talks have been sparked here in the Talent Management offices.

We’re all excited that, at last, a high end brand like Marc Jacobs is set to cater for women larger than a size 14 in a move which will undoubtedly influence the modelling industry.

Exposing the news on Twitter, Duffy said: “Listen, we are in the very beginning stages of talking to a partner about plus sizes.

“We gotta do larger sizes,” he added. “I'm with you. As soon as I get back to NY. I'm on it! It will take me about a year. But stay with us.”

Although it looks as though Marc Jacobs is alone in the move - being the first and currently only major fashion house to produce a plus-size clothing line – Talent Management is sure others will follow suit.

CRYSTAL RENN & PAULINA PORIZKOVA

In fact, with influential fashion gurus such as Crystal Renn and Paulina Porizkova supporting the shift towards plus-size, it seems society’s perception of size may be changing.

Renn and Porizkova shared a panel at Glamour's Women of the Year Conference in New York this week, and while doing so, they taught us all a lesson about fashion’s controversial size debate.

Interrupting Renn, the champion of the plus-size model movement, Porizkova jumped in saying: “Crystal, can the two of us stand up next to each other for a moment, so that the audience can see us?”

Stood side by side, Porizkova continued: “I'm pretty much the same size now that I was in the '80s, when I was actually modelling, and I was known for doing bathing suits.

“Here's Crystal, a plus-size model. This is a plus-size model in 2010. This [Porizkova pointed to herself] is an average-size model in 1980. Times have changed.”

Renn added: “What I would like to see is a bunch of different-sized models in fashion. Right now, we have extremes. We have size 2s and size zeros, and then over here we have size 14s and 16s.

“What I would like to see happen is that you watch the runway, and you see all different sizes — you see 2s, you see 4s, you see 6s, we see 12s and 14s. Then there's no controversy about body size.”

Here at Talent Management, we couldn’t agree more. Our dedicated modelling arm, Models Direct, has a whole host of models varying in age, ethnicity, and of course, size.

Slowly but surely, plus-size modelling is a trend that looks set to become the norm, and something that Talent Management is ready to cater for.
