Eco-nomics: Trading Good for Goods
Green action auction inspires Torontonians to use deeds as dollars
Unlike typical auction, bidders committed to performing green actions rather than using dollars. Bids ranged from changing how and what they purchased, to offers to teach and campaign on behalf of the planet. The auction was a success, with plenty of bids from women across the GTA.
The first winning bidder offered her communications skills toward a letter-writing campaign that would spotlight two issues of interest to the GTA green community: improving bike lane safety in Toronto and the proposed Pickering Airport which is slated to be built on 7,500 acres of farmland and wetlands. The second winner committed to becoming a green advocate at work, improving the recycling systems and educating coworkers as to the importance of green acts in the workplace.
In return they receive tickets to attend an eco-focused women’s afternoon that is part fashion swap, part beauty workshop, and part networking on November 6th, 2010. (Find out more information about the event at http://guestlistapp.com/
For businesses, this creates a new way to inspire engagement in the broader community and show their commitment to the environment. Gisela McKay of Green Instead says that the auction is an innovative way to promote her space rather than using traditional advertising channels. “When Marta approached me with the idea to ‘auctionize not advertise’, I immediately saw the value in promoting the event this way, plus it is in alignment with what we do here on a daily basis. We will definitely use this option again in the near future for other items, like our new book.”
