Nov. 7, 2010 - PRLog -- Our latest update on the Kazakhstan and Central Asian telecoms market includes new mobile subscriber figures for the second quarter ended June 2010, with the exception of Kyrgyzstan. On the whole, the second quarter of 2010 showed the majority of Central Asian mobile markets to have stronger growth than in the previous quarter. Leading the way was Uzbekistan, which reported an impressive 1.08mn net additions in Q210, up from 337,000 new subscribers in Q110 bringing its total to 17.830mn. The country is the largest market in the region, with strong competition from internationally-backed operators. For this reason alone, perhaps, Uzbekistan revealed in August 2010, that its operator Ucell, owned by Scandinavian firm TeliaSonera, had commercially launched LTE services in the country, joining rival Uzdunrobita, controlled by Russia's MTS. However, BMI continues to think that the launches by two of the region's biggest telecoms firms amount to little more than grandstanding and an understandable decision to test the technology in a fairly demanding market with regards to roll-out. At this time, therefore, we do not see LTE having any significant impact on the growth of the Uzbek market in the immediate term.

Turkmenistan almost doubled the number of additions it reported in the second quarter compared with the previous quarter. The country announced having 310,000 net additions bringing the total subscriber base to 2.519mn subscribers and compared with the 172,000 net additions in Q110. Stronger growth is to be expected as market leader Barash Communications, owned by MTS, announced in late July 2010, a project to expand its mobile network in remote and underserved areas of the country. With its urban market, like those in other Central Asian markets, showing saturation, entering the rural segment is the next phase of subscriber growth.

Kazakhstan noted 594,000 net additions in the second quarter, bringing its subscriber base to 14.981mn. The ownership of major operators in the country by foreign investors has much like that of the Uzbekistan market helped boost subscriber growth as operators expand their networks and offer competitively-priced tariffs. An improved macro-economic environment has also been responsible for stronger growth in 2010, and tapping into this, triple-play operator, Alem Communications expects to launch a mobile WiMAX-based wireless broadband network in the country.

Meanwhile, Tajikistan showed a slightly weaker Q210 performance with net additions of 234,000, and which was lower than the 280,000 new subscribers in the previous quarter. The industry has suffered in part by an unsupportive government, and had faced a ban on the advertising of mobile services in the capital, Dushanbe, put in place by the mayor's office. However, in May 2010, it was announced that this had been temporarily lifted while central government officials look into its legality, reported cellular news. This is not the first time that the industry has come under fire, but we remain concerned over the potential impact it could have to the future development of the mobile sector.
