Nov. 9, 2010 - PRLog -- NORCROSS, Georgia –  Ashworth College (http://www.ashworthcollege.edu) today announced that Kim Lawrence, a mother from Covington, GA is the recipient of a Project Working Mom 2010 full-tuition scholarship. Lawrence will pursue a Psychology Associate Degree program at Ashworth College, an accredited online institution. Her goal is to use her education as she works with troubled teenagers and low income families within her community.

Ashworth College is one of eight accredited online schools participating in Project Working Mom 2010. The program awarded more than 280 scholarships, totaling close to $5 million. Ashworth College is awarding 23 of those scholarships. This is the fourth cycle of Project Working Mom and the second time that Ashworth has participated. To date, Ashworth has awarded 21 scholarships through the program.

“Growing up I had the opportunity to attend college, however when my mother became ill and my family decided not to place her in a nursing home, I agreed to quit college and care for her full time,” Lawrence said.

“After my mother died, I went to work in order to support myself. Marriage and two children followed,” she explained. “By this time there just enough money to support the family without any 'extras' --  including my going back to college.”

“I’ve been inspired by many of my friends who have gone back to school and received a degree. If they can do it, I know I can too,” Lawrence added. “Taking online classes is ideal for me because it won’t interfere with my work schedule.”

“Participating in the Project Working Mom Scholarship Program has been a positive experience for Ashworth College,” said Dr. Leslie Gargiulo, Ashworth Vice President, Education. “It’s a great opportunity, through education, to help deserving, hard-working adults make a positive impact in their lives.”

“With the current economic climate, it is essential to have the greatest competitive advantage possible,” Gargiulo added. “Having a college degree or advanced training can set an employee or job seeker apart -- demonstrating business knowledge to peers, potential customers and current or future employers.”

Each of the Project Working Mom 2010 scholarship recipients will receive a full-tuition scholarship to pursue online education. Demonstrative of the need and demand among adults for education, the Project Working Mom programs have generated more than 616,000 applications for full-tuition scholarships from moms and dads who want to return to school.

“The announcement of this final round of scholarship recipients brings to a close a program that has forever changed more than 450 lives thanks to the generous support of our partner schools,” said Terrence Thomas, Executive Vice President of Marketing for eLearners.com, which created Project Working Mom. “Through this program we’ve helped eliminate barriers that have kept parents from going back to school and it’s been an honor to have been a part of the process.”
