Mission: The Catalyst Foundation Mission is to create a healing society. Under this umbrella, we are dedicated to decreasing the impact of childhood abuse and trauma on society and the world through direct service, public education, advocacy, policy reform, and empowerment of directly affected and disenfranchised groups. We are also dedicated to improving the health and well-being of low-income, uninsured, and homeless persons through high-quality, compassionate medical care, mental health services, health education, and supportive social services.

History: The Catalyst Foundation was established in 1992 by Dr. Susan Lawrence and her husband Sonny Bartz, who died of AIDS the following year. Through the years, The Catalyst Foundation services have expanded to meet changing needs including the addition of a food pantry, mental health care, a community garden, and outreach and prevention services. In 2010, Dr. Lawrence founded the Catalyst Foundation Trauma-Informed Social Change Movement dedicated to finding creative and practical solutions to the social problems created by the cumulative impact of widespread childhood abuse and other forms of human trauma. http://www.facebook.com/traumainformedsocialchange

The Winds of Change Art Auction & Benefit Concert carries on the annual Catalyst Foundation tradition of celebrating the redemptive power of the Prison Honor Program which The Catalyst Foundation supports as an extraordinary example of a Trauma Informed system of correctional management. (www.prisonhonorprogram.org) The program provides prisoner-artists, “Artists Serving Humanity,” (ASH) incarcerated artists in the Honor Program at the California State Prison-Los Angeles County an opportunity to give back and to create unique collectable fine art works which they donate to charities like The Catalyst Foundation for auction.  Original oil paintings, pastels and sculptures are created as a part of rehabilitative programming and include paintings awarded First Prize, Best of Show and other recognitions at Antelope Valley Fair 2010. All artists have learned to paint, draw, and sculpt in prison and devote a significant amount of time to create works donated to charity as a way to give back to society. Sculptures are created using non-traditional materials available to prisoners. Leading artists include Kit Paepule and Chuck Weyant. Kit Paepule.

One of the founding fathers of ASH, Kit has been in prison for 20 years. He is deeply aware of, and takes responsibility for, the wrongs he has done. He dedicates his life and artistic talents to giving back to society, especially to programs which help prevent kids from going through the same hardships he did. ‘To donate is the greatest thing,” says Kit. “There are a lot of good people in prison who made poor choices and decisions they wish they could undo. ASHprovides a vehicle to express the goodness within all these men who are shuffled through the system.”

Chuck Weyant Chuck began painting in the early 21st century, and wishes he had started sooner. He has a special affinity for painting scenes from the past, especially the 1920’s and 1930’s. Chuck explains, “Considering the difficult experiences I have had during nearly 30 years in prison, I am grateful to have found this wonderful fellowship of artists in the ASH group.” He greatly enjoys giving his paintings away for the benefit of others. A highly accomplished artist, Chuck’s paintings are collected by prominent members of society.

Humanitarian Award: The decision to present the 2010 Humanitarian award to Matthew Cate, Secretary, California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation, was inspired by Secretary Cate’s courageous support of The Honor Program.
