Nov. 3, 2010 - PRLog -- A new study by the UK’s fastest growing online independent travel agent of 1,078 newlywed couples has revealed the top honeymoon destinations of this year, with Paphos in Cyprus topping the list and the Dominican Republic coming in a close second.

http://www.sunshine.co.uk questioned the respondents about their honeymoon experiences and found that 11% didn’t even have one. When asked why this was the case, 54% said they wanted to ‘save the money’ and 3% claimed to have ‘just decided not to’ have a honeymoon.

The study also looked into the most popular destinations for honeymoons from the past year and put together a list of the ten most popular answers.

1.       Paphos, Cyprus

2.       Dominican Republic, Caribbean

3.       Cape Verde, Africa

4.       Cancun, Mexico

5.       New York, USA

6.       Cannes, South of France

7.       Algarve, Portugal

8.       The Maldives

9.       Marrakesh, Morocco

10.   Sharm el Sheik, Egypt

An increasingly popular trend was also brought to light from the survey, with 23% claiming to have requested ‘money towards the honeymoon’ as a wedding gift, instead of the usual household items and traditional presents.

During the poll, sunshine.co.uk further questioned all of the respondents about their idea of a ‘dream honeymoon’. When asked, ‘how long do you think the perfect honeymoon would last for?’ 89% agreed it would be for four weeks.

When asked ‘Where would have been your dream destination for your honeymoon?’ the most popular answer was the ‘Caribbean’. None of the respondents who had a honeymoon went to Paris after their wedding and only 2 respondents went to Venice, suggesting that the traditionally ‘romantic’ destinations are now taking a back seat.

Chris Brown, co-founder of http://www.sunshine.co.uk, commented on the findings;

“Last year, we did a similar study, and it’s interesting to see how different the most popular destinations are after just a year. There are many places that featured in the list last year, such as Bulgaria and Thailand, that didn’t get a look in this time.

“It was interesting to see that many couples asked for money as a wedding gift to put towards their honeymoon; I think it’s actually a very shrewd idea and one that certainly helps soften the blow to your bank balance after already having paid for a wedding.”
